The Love Boat

Remember the show "The Love Boat"? It was about a cruise ship, its captain and crew, and its passengers having romantic and humorous adventures.

Anat Hoffman wrote the following, while writing about her son's decision to get married in Cyprus instead of via the Israeli Rabbinate:
I am seeking a large used ship, a captain, and a few willing rabbis to launch a loveboat that will travel in and out of Israeli territorial waters to perform marriage ceremonies until our law passes in Knesset.
(hattip to Joel)
The Love Boat. That was a great show back in the early 80s...  and it is a funny reference to this idea of circumventing the Rabbanut with a boat moving out of Israel's territorial waters just to perform weddings....

  1. 1. I am under the impression that the law of the ship's flag follows the ship. So on an Israeli ship, I assume you would need a rabbanut rabbi to marry someone. Of course, the could register the ship elsewhere. (Can someone get appointed Chief Rabbi of Libera?)

    2. Why do they need a rabbi? Just get the captain to do it, once you register the ship somewhere else.

    1. I think it is pretty obvious that she wants the weddings to be jewish, just not controlled by the rabbanut. she doesnt say her son had to go to cyprus (because he was marrying a psulei chitun), but he chose to just to avoid the rabbanut.

  2. Would the love boat rabbi be allowed to accept payment?

    1. haha!
since he wouldnt be working for the rabbanut, I assume he'd accept payment. or maybe the love boat would pay him a salary and then he would not take money from each couple...

  3. i remember back in the oslo days there was an attempt/dream to do secular weddings in the PA. turned out that hamas is also not crazy about the idea of secular weddings and the PA killed the idea.

  4. Better they killed the idea, rather than kill the couple
