Do unto others...

In an interview on the radio (the interview was focused mainly on the life insurance for avreichim issue), MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ) said that "Avigdor Lieberman is a parasite living on other people's account who has never passed any law to benefit the citizens of Israel. Lieberman was victorious in municipal elections in Jerusalem, Haifa and Tzfat only because of the Haredi community though he himself did not bring in even a single vote. All Lieberman knows to do is the blow up the the Asuan Bridge, assassinate Haniyeh within 48 hours, bring down Hamas, and everything is just talk. This is a parasite."

Gafni's opinion might or might not be accurate, but it is ill-spoken.

Every single time someone in the public eye calls the haredim "parasites", and it happens far too often (even once is too often), the Haredi leadership blows a gasket, and rightfully so. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. What you don't want done to you, don't do to others. These are classic pieces of wisdom offered by our sages. Gafni should not be calling other people parasites when he does not want others calling him and his community the same.

  1. So, Gafni is right that chareidim shouldn't be called parasites, but he should not call out someone else when they are indeed a parasite?
Gafni's problem with the word is that it's not true. Why should he not use it against Lieberman when it is true?

    1. interesting take. so you are suggesting that if others believe it is true to call anyone specific, even a haredi, a parasite, it is perfectly fine (though the person being called still has the right to say it is not true and then a hateful name).. Gafni is ok because he believes it to be true. When other people say it they are saying it without thinking it is true?

    2. It's 100% true when applied to Charedim who refuse to work, but still expect everyone else to support them. (And yes, the army service restrictions are just an excuse, because Charedim won't even opt for National Service.)

Lieberman is no more a parasite than any other politician, so Gafni is just blowing smoke.

  2. Poor Moshe Leon. Lieberman can't do anything for him now, which means the charedim won't support him anymore, which means he's useless for another four and a half years.

And poor Moshe Leon supporters, who explicitly said that they were voting for him because he had connections up the wazoo. "Oh, he can make deals!" (This was one big reason I didn't vote for him. A man supported by both Deri *and* Lieberman has to stink.) Meanwhile, he's dependent on the opposition to pass anything.

  3. While it may not PC nor may it serve any constructive purpose, the facts speak for themselves. While it is not all of them, those that decide to sit on their derriere all day in the name of God and pseudo-holiness and consequently effectively cause us to finance their benefits without giving anything back to society at large is pretty much the very definition of parasite. Definition-An organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.
