shluggin kapparos (video)

During these days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, many people have the custom of "shlugging kapparos". Some do it with money (like me) which is donated to the poor, some do it with a chicken, and some even do it with fish (I have seen this!).

There has been a lot of discussion recently about the need to shlug your kapparos, if you are doing it with a chicken, in a place that treats the chickens reasonably well and does not cramp them in and leave them too long in the sun.

Anyway, here is a nice video of some people shluggin their kapparos...

  1. Why is the Chabad-looking guy holding the chicken for the men (probably a rooster) directly, but the chicken for the women (probably a hen) in a box? Is there an issur of negiyah with poultry?

Keep your eyes peeled for the new questionaire from chareidi-ish schools (Does the child's father eat hen?/Does the child's mother eat rooster?).

  3. that's right, wave a chicken over your head to take away your sins. And people think scientology is strange.
