interesting news tidbits
- The committee of ministers dealing with preparing new laws has passed an initial reading of a proposed new law. The law would require all Israeli flags to be made in Israel, and importing Israeli flags made in other countries would be illegal.
- The committee of ministers dealing with preparing new laws has passed an initial reading of a proposed new law. This proposed law targets the exemption religious girls receive from army service - any religious girl who does not want to serve in the army currently has the ability to declare that she is religious and can't serve in the army for religious reasons and she gets her exemption automatically. The proposed law would require any such young woman seeking the exemption to bring a letter of "proof" that she actually studies in a religious school. The religious and haredi MKs are against the proposed law as it would make it more difficult to get the exemption, and it is a breach in the status quo. They are also concerned that young women who went to non-religious schools but have become more religious would have a very difficult time getting the exemption, under the new law.
- MK Yaakov "Ketzaleh" Katz has finally submitted the proposal for the amendment to the terror organization law he has been talking about ever since he was attacked when he went to a shul in Mea Shearim. Katz has proposed to declare the "sikrikim" as an official terror organization.
- The papers are not yet releasing a name, but a "to'ein rabbani" in the rabbinical courts has been arrested for sexually molesting his female clients. According to what I have been told, when he had clients who could not pay his fees, he worked out alternate payment plans, if you know what I mean..3 women have stepped forward so far with complaints, but they expect many more women were molested by him. He has admitted to the accusations.
The flag one is a real pity. Instead of cheap Chinese flags for NIS 5 or NIS 10, there will be cheap Israeli flags at NIS 30 or NIS 40. And as a result, there will be far fewer flags next holiday.

But isn't this just the point? To find those girls that suddenly "find religion" right before they are to be drafted?
only if they "find religion", but not if they find religion. and the MKs are also upset that the already religious girls have to go through more trouble now and cant just make the statement they always have been able to.
ReplyDeleteand beyond all that, probably the part they are most upset about is the change in status quo.
I thought that the flag law only effected flags purchased by the Government or public sector - i.e., the millions of flags on Government buildings, street lights, schools, etc.
ReplyDeleteI didn't thnk that it effected individuals who want top purchase a flag to display on their house.
I hope that they also make sure that Israeli manufactured flags are made correctly, lately there have been a lot of flags with the wrong shade of blue, wrong dimensions, or in other ways not made to the specifications of our national flag.
I thought so too originally, but I reread the original article to check that and it spoke about making it illegal to import Israeli flags from other countries, and when it spoke about using flags only from israel it didnt specify anything in the government.
ReplyDeletethe original article, which I see I forgot to link to, was not really an article but a "breaking news" announcement on ynet.

ReplyDeleteYou mean instead of being sent out to be shot at by Arabs, these girls are going to have to do more paperwork? It's especially troubling for Anglo families who fled the bureaucracy of America for the hassle-free government of Israel and whose daughters will now have to scrounge around to get a form letter from their high schools.
he worked out alternate payment plans, if you know what I mean
I don't. What do you mean?
tashlumim, bli ribit.
ReplyDeleteDuh,
ReplyDeleteThanks. I should start paying with tashlumim. It seems like a lot more fun than paying all at once.
