John Demjanjuk convicted of aiding the killing of 27,900 Jews during Holocaust
Another Nazi brought to justice. 5 years is a joke considering he assisted in the murder of 27,900 Jews, but he will likely be dead before the end if his sentence anyway.
From Haaretz on the Demjanjuk sentencing:
A German court found John Demjanjuk guilty on Thursday of helping to kill 27,900 Jews at the Nazi death camp Sobibor during the Holocaust.I am not sure why he needed a translator in order to say "No".
The Munich court sentenced the 91-year-old to five years in prison as an accessory to mass murder as a guard at the Polish camp during World War Two. Defense attorneys had said during the 18-month trial they would appeal any guilty verdict.
Earlier Thursday, when Asked by judges whether he wanted to say any final words Thursday, Demjanjuk - speaking through an interpreter - replied: "No."
He should rot in hell.
Bear in mind that the prosecution's case of accessory to murder was based on the fact that since he was there, he was a participant, and not based on any specific action which he took. No one is saying that he killed anyone or was more directly involved than just being present. This is a unique (or at least rare) application of the law.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, it may not even be him. Israel convicted him as well, then overturned the conviction, saying that it was a case of mistaken identity. If Israel wouldn't uphold the conviction, it's hard to imagine that any other country would. The FBI also has doubts regarding the authenticity of the documents used to convict him.
I'm not saying that those who assisted in the extermination of Jews should be allowed to go scot-free, but I don't see the good in the conviction of someone who did nothing.
well, for now they seem to be convinced it is him beyond a reasonable doubt. we'll see what happens on appeal.
