The Jewish Worker posted this ad from the recent edition of the Mishpacha Magazine:
My Thoughts
1. Where has this been my whole life? Why is this the first time I am hearing about such a major segulah?
2. The English Mishpacha provides far more blogging material than the Hebrew edition. I should clearly be reading the English...
3. The whole thing reads like an April Fool's joke. Or maybe Purim Torah.
4. How much does it cost, and where does one buy them? Te parts scanned in do not say.
5. First it talks about double-wrapping them and carrying them, then it talks about people wearing them. Which is it?
6. Does it only work if you are chassidic and a follower of the Baal ShemTov?
7. If people can get away with wearing this segula ring, does that mean married men can now wear wedding rings? If they are looked at funny because of it, they can always just say it is the segula ring...
8. Do any of you, my readers, have any experience with these segulah rings? Did they work for you? What are your thoughts on them?
somebody needs to create an iphone app to be able to keep track of the segulahs... just too many
ReplyDeleteI updated my post with the contact information, you can see it here:

Here is another segula ad, this one for segula wine:

This is actually not a new segulah, I heard of it many years ago. It's out of Lakewood or Monsey (I forget which), with some rav having the secret of the right things to put on it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a few hundred dollars in cost and has permutations of shem Hashem engraved on it, a solid silver ring with another larger solid silver ring (with no writing) that fits over it as a cover.
this scam has been around for a while. i think this is the same fellow who used to run segulahring.com, which is now down.
ReplyDeleteyou can see an archive of the front page here:

IIRC, he had all sorts of testimonials, such as that by placing the segulah ring under an off the derech girl, she went back on the derech, etc.

Once again, the immortal words of David Hannum prove true.

Here's a link to where the Hida talks about it (Tziporen Shamir 9:122):

In case anyone is looking to comparison shop, this site is offering a better deal.

Although I doubt it's real silver, I suspect that the silver is not me'akev.
And here's a link to the Kav Hayashar (end of Chapter 70):

The Hida simply references the Kav Hayashar which talks about this being a segula for 1 thing- not become a Baal Keri. Unless I am missing something he doesn't talk about depression, waking from coma, parnasa or any of the other "miracles" the ad talks about.
ReplyDeleteThe ridiculous part is that just last week Mishapacha ran a long article on "alternative healing" and said many were Avoda Zara. How can they run this ad which seems to be closer to Avoda Zara then any of the methods they spoke about. This is just absurd!
"6. Does it only work if you are chassidic and a follower of the Baal ShemTov?"
ReplyDeleteIt is actually R' Yoel Baal Shem Tov, who is a different person, unrelated, than Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov.

josh
who is rav yoel baal shemtov?
ReplyDeletei have a post planned for tomorrow about him. i'll send you a preview link.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it different from a קמיע?

ReplyDeleteI posted a whole bunch of links to all of the segula ads that I have blogged about in the past 2 years, Some of the segula type ads that I have seen in the past it is actually quite fascinating to see how many different segula campaigns that different organizations have come up with and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
ReplyDeleteIt should be cast back into the firey furnace from whence it came on the mountains of Mordor.
