More Craziness From the Burqa Ladies

2 more stories of the Burqa Ladies have hit the airwaves. It is almost hard to believe that these people can be so crazy, but when you see how they dress and think it is the right way, you realize they can be.

1 story is that at a wedding in Jerusalem the other day, the kallah, a member of the burqa club, refused to put her hand out in order to receive the ring. She refused on the insistence that doing so is a breach in the rules of tzniyus. It took some time, but supposedly the officiating rav, someone associated with the Eida, pressured her enough that she gave in and did it. (this was initially reported in forums by someone supposedly present, but the administrator removed the post. so it is only alleged)

With the Eida finally starting to fight against the phenomenon, seeing as how many of those involved are somehow coming from the Eida ranks or otherwise associated with the Eida, perhaps they need to not just talk about how it needs to be stoppeג, but maybe they should actually put some real social pressure on, such as, say, not agree to perform weddings for them? Or other similar bans - no life cycle events such as bris, or others.

The second story is stranger. A woman, a burqa lady, fighting with her husband about the schooling of the children, took her three kids and disappeared. He wanted the kids to be educated in a normal haredi school, but she refused (I would guess that she wanted to only send them to the school set up by the burqa people). This led to regular fighting, and after he shut off the electricity in the apartment where she was (she wasn't living with him?), she took the three kids and ran away, going into hiding.

The mother is due to give birth to child #4 in the near future, and considering the way they go it seems she will refuse to go to a hospital. the Eida has contacted the hospitals and requested they be informed if she shows up. They are threatening to take away her kids, and are working together with the social workers to resolve this. (source: Bechadrei)

It just gets stranger and stranger.

  1. Not that I want to encourage this type of behavior, but there was an easy out for the girl who didn't want to put out her finger -- have her appoint a shliach to accept the ring. They could have then proceeded with the wedding without delay and her sensibilities could have been maintained.

  2. The craziest part of all is that no one inside the Eida realizes this is where followers take things when you advocate certain hashkafos and behaviors for the masses. In other words, Eida is the root cause!

  3. Shmuel Peppenheim (formerly askan of the Eida and grandson of one of the founders) wrote an editorial today about why this phenomenon is destroying us.. http://www.kikarhashabat.co.il/%D7%94%D7%98%D7%90%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%91%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%96%D7%A6%D7%99%D7%94-%D7%AA%D7%91%D7%99%D7%90-%D7%9C%D7%A0%D7%95-%D7%94%D7%A8%D7%A1-%D7%95%D7%97%D7%95.html

  5. maybe the Eida ought to really look at what causes this type of behavior and address that? Or not, seeing as how that would reflect back on themselves too much.....

    oh well,

My guess it would be something along the lines of מגלה טפח מכסה טפח...

  7. If she wouldn't let her soon to be husband put her wedding ring on her finger, she is in for a big surprise on her wedding night.

  9. how do these women have sex?

    They don't, it's not tzanua.

That's why the Eida is finally opposing them!

  10. I think MotherInIsrael found reports that they limit it to fertilly-justifiable moments.

  11. Rafi - the more I read stories in the media - and the more details I get from reputable sources it becomes obvious that there is an agenda by some people (aka askanim) against the 'shal'ists. Its has practically nothing to do with Judaism or any religion for that matter - its a campaign to portray a sect of people in a negative light. Even if that means "beefing up" the stories and "leaking" them to the media.

If there is one thing all this has tough me its that you can't believe a single word you read...

  12. Also more craziness from the Eida. I'm very distressed by the Burqa ladies--but I'm also distressed by the Eida. The Eida is bothered by these women's insubordination to their husbands as if that's the problem (I'll admit it's part of the problem).

  13. Maybe the women realize something is inherently wrong with the direction the men are driving the community. The problem is with those shals on their faces they certainly can't read the GPS themselves either!
