Removing The Dome From The Kotel Picture

An issue is being made about a pamphlet that had been handed out by the IDF Rabbinate to soldiers ahead of Hanukkah. This issue seems appropriate for discussion on the 10th of Teves.

From Haaretz:
Israel’s military rabbinate released an educational document ahead of the holiday of Hanukkah last month, featuring a photo of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount without the Dome of the Rock, Haaretz learned on Thursday.

The photo was featured in a packet prepared by the Military Rabbinate issued to Israel Defense Forces bases ahead of Hanukkah, under the section titled “The Festival of Jewish Heroism,” which included an article and a quiz on the Jewish struggle against Hellenistic rule.

One reserves officer talking with Haaretz said that when he “received the materials from the battalion rabbi something seemed strange about that picture.”

“We get material from the rabbinate every week and it’s mostly positive things,” the IDF officer said, adding that the edited picture was part of an “official release, which is why it’s problematic the army is distributing it.”

The IDF Spokesman’s Office said in the response that Haaretz’s description was “absurd and biased, a fact which we can only regret,” adding that the educational packet included a photo meant to illustrate Jerusalem during the period of the Second Temple.

“As was explained to the reporter, the Dome of the Rock did not exist at that time, so there was no need for it to appear in the picture,” the IDF said.

Speaking with Haaretz, the reserves officer said he expected “the Military Rabbinate to be more alert about the educational messages it passes on, especially considering the Temple Mount’s history,” adding: “A world war could break if someone would try to do something about that place, and I think they should be more cautious when approaching the subject.”

“It’s infuriating that the rabbinate isn’t more being more responsible about this,” the officer added.
I am against obscuring reality, false images and the like. if a realistic picture is being printed and is altered to change people's perception of reality, that is wrong. Had that been the case here, had the Dome been edited out so recipients of the pamphlet would not be aware of the Dome's presence on the Mount, that would be sheker.

Being that, according to the IDF Spokesperson, the purpose was to depict what it probably looked like during the Second Temple, then I see nothign wrong with it. If that is the case, I have a different problem with the image - why didn't they make the picture as if behind the Wall was the actual Second Temple? From wha i can make out in the little picture, it seems like all they did was edit out the Dome and leave it as an open and empty area. If they were looking to depict what it looked like back then, they should have put an image of the Temple in the picture...

  1. Wasn't the kotel built by Hourdas (sp?)? If so, it also wasn't there when Chanukah happened.

  2. Okay, let's leave out the obvious provocation - I can clearly see figures in the women's section. Have these people no shame?

You are missing something big when they say this is what the Wall used to look like. The Al-Aksa mosque is still in the picture at the right!

  7. I didnt analyze the picture that much - it was small enough as it is and I was just looking for what they replaced the Dome with.. but you are all correct with other inconsistencies. makes me wonder even more what they were really trying to do...

  8. If the picture is more appealing than the reality, we need a strategy to fix the reality.

  9. We know what happens when extremists of any stripe get an idea in their heads. Regardless of the reasoning, putting this picture out - a picture of the 5772 Kotel with 5772-style people and nothing behind it - is an insane provocation with no conceivable benefit. Lo aleinu someone tries to do something about this, and it will lead to something only describable with the words Rachmana litzlan.
