Rav Shteinman is quoted as having said, when encouraging all yeshiva students and kollel yungerleit from around Israel to attend the funeral of Rav Sheinberg zt"l earlier today, that "to our distress just about no "talmidei chachomim gedolim" remain in our generation, and the few that remain should be treated with great respect."

This letter from Rav Scheinberg gives reason to pause.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Rav Shteinman was critically ill in hospital. Is he doing better?
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of great scholars. There are few leaders-one of the few I can think of is Machon Shilo's HaRav David Bar-Hayim.
ReplyDeleteIdiot.
DeleteIt is interesting you shared this quote as I was just talking to a friend of mine about the same subject. The era of the grand Gedolim is coming to an end. This has been in the works for the past 25 or so years. It is sad because some of it has to do with the lack of foresight from these now deceased leaders in cultivating those who could be leading voices for the community. It also is a result of the lack of creativity. There is little that seems innovative and creative in Rabbinic thought at the moment, unless one goes outside the haredi community, and we know that those "modern" rabbis, who I admire, will never get the universal recognition. I just want to note that the above is not specifically related to R. Scheinberg's passing, as there are issues as noted by one other commenter, yet he is seen as part of that generation.
