Kuti Sabag, from Bet Shemesh, was the winner last night of the Israeli reality tv show The Big Brother. Sabag won a million shekels.
I don't know anything about this show, how it works, or anything about Kuti Sabag other than that he won this years show.
However, if Bet Shemesh is a haredi city it sure has a funny way of showing it!

Beit Shemesh, existed long before the arrival of the english speaking olim (haredim or MO's).
ReplyDeleteIt was a town inhabited mostly by North African immigrants.
Back in 1969 or thereabout, Mr Shidlovski, a french Jew, even established there a factory for Mirage jet engines. Menoei Bet Shemesh.
I don't know if the factory still functions, but it sure wasn't established to employ unemployable Hareidim!
A brief explanation of the programme. A number of people from across the spectrum of life in Israel live in an apartment together for 3 months, without any connection to the outside world. They have contact only with someone called Big Brother who sees and talks with them. Also the TV presenters can see and hear everything that goes on. Every week the public vote who to remove, until they are left with the winner. Sometimes friendships are made, sometimes people get on each other's nerves. There were 2 religious married women at the beginning, but they were very provocative, and unfriendly to the others, and left or were thrown out. Amongst those left, there were 2 guys who put on kipot occasionally for kiddush or candle lighting. The guy who won is from a traditional family in Beit Shemesh, and lit candles for Shabbat. This poor guy was put in a difficult position, as he grew closer to a girl also ther, I think from Russia, who it turns out was not Jewish, as her mother is Muslim (not Arab). There were some romantic signs between them, but Kuti did show a very strong desire to keep his religion intact. How he will act now that he is back in real life, who knows. None of the romances in the previous programms ever continued.
ReplyDeleteHaving watched some programmes, I don't think very much of it.
