Quote Of The Day
All you have in your heads are the haredim. Deal with your education first. Learn from us how to educate. There is violence, kids are being murdered and all the time you want to talk about the Tal La.. This is the only thing that interests you? There is no Iran and there are no other problems? The one who put it in place was Barak, and the one that extended it was Kadima. What are you debating about so much? There are no other problems in the country?

Well he's right about some of that. Israel's secular education system is a mess so demands that the Chareidim reform theirs is hypocritical. But given that they are potentially an imminent majority in the country, they do demand some attention.
ReplyDeleteThe Tal Law is not about reforming Charedi educaiton it's about obligating chareidim to their fir share of national service. With all due respect to MK Gafni I am not at all convinced that the secular have what to learn from the Chareidi education system.
ReplyDeleteHow silly. perhaps we should deal with the problems with education before dealing with other issues, not last.
ReplyDeleteor wait, how about this: how about we find leaders who are capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time.
If Gafni can only deal with one issue from start to finish and then and only then can he move on to another problem, perhaps he is the problem that should be dealt with first.
What he means to say is that this whole election is turning into a big chareidi bashing party. The elections have been called in honor of attacking the chareidim. Most if not all of the secular parties are running on anti chareidi platforms. Doesnt sound like a healthy country. In fact, if the Republicans and Democrats both ran on platforms similar to the secular parties, and swap the word "chareidi" with the word "Jew" youd call America a very anti semetic place.
ReplyDeleteanon:
ReplyDeletewhat are you talking about?
The American presidential election is one of the dirtiest ever. They accuse each side of all sorts of awful things, such as anti americanism, patriotism, religious values... its not anti christian for the two parties, whom are both run by christians, attack the christianity of the other.
Just like in Israel, there are multiple sides but when the majority (jews) are arguing with members of the majority, it is not anti-semitism, its a schism between values by members of the same community.
And what you see as anti-charedi the seculars see as pro-equality
lapid said as much, and so does every other secular leader when they expilicitly state, this isn't about charedi, this is about equality.
And the charedi parties aren't anti-secular? pot calling the kettle what?
I see his point being that there are very serious issues to discuss and solve yet they are all being ignored while everyone talks about the haredim as if that is the only issue.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where you guys get the news from.
ReplyDeleteI see Iran in the news every day. I see Egypt in the news every day. Plenty of issues are being dealt with.
Meanwhile the Supreme court declared the Tal Law unconstitutional. And unlike other countries, where when the supreme court rules a law is unconstitutional it gets struck down immediately, here the tal law was delayed and delayed and now the gov't dissolves in order to extend the tal law by at least another 6 months.
And this issue shouldn't be discussed?
And why is it anti-charedi to discuss how the politicians are ignoring the supreme court and have dissolved the govt in order to avoid the supreme court's ruling?
Seriously, can't we ever discuss an issue without it being called anti-charedi?
Guess what, this is Israel, just about any internal issue is going to affect numerous segments of society, including the charediim, not as anti-charediim.
Anti-Charedi?
ReplyDeleteAnd what do Charedim do in their political campaigns?
3 and a 1/2 years ago I listened to one of the gedolim speaking in the Gra shul the day before the local elections.
What he implied about the 2 other candidates wasn't exactly Dati-Leumi "loving".
The bottom line is that politics everywhere are dirty and when you lie down in the mud you can't stand up clean.
Time for equality. Like everybody doing their share of learning Torah, keeping Shabbos, kashrus, the bein adom l'chaveiros and makom. That's equality.
ReplyDeleteThis call for "equality" is simply the yetzer hara saying let's get rid of yiddishkeit so we can go on and live our lives as we would like, without our conscious getting in the way.
Shame on those of you who are falling for the trap.
interesting how you define jewishness and being Israeli with a yiddish word.
ReplyDeleteregardless, why is the supreme's court ruling on the tal law deemed anti-charedi?
and why do we accept the politicians dissolving a gov't in order to avoid dealing with a supreme court ruling.
and why is discussing this issue considered anti-charedi by default?
and no one is calling for anyone to give up their yiddishkeit. Seriously, where do you get your news from?
Anon- If I understand you correctly you are saying that you fully support implementing Hesder type service across the board where everyone does both regular army service (1.5 years), learning in yeshiva and then continue to do regular Miluim service - do you really support that?
ReplyDeleteInteresting strategy. If Gafni yells the words "haredi haredi haredi" enough, maybe they will circle the wagons, and he can get people forget about how he LIED to the gedolim to get them to sign off on United "Tora" Judiasm support for GK expulsion. I wonder what he told them? I would NOT want to be Gafni on Yom Hadin.
ReplyDeleteUTJ is neither "united" nor "Torah" nor "Judaism". Gafni blabbers on about an alleged obsession with Charedim. He is the one who is obsessed. UTJ's sole relationship to the State is purely secular- or worse: purely mercenary. UTJ will do anything for a bribe for a handout. Gafni whines that there are other issues. What he means is that there other issues that he is willing to sell to the highest bidder.
