Thanks to yaak I got this story that I probably would have missed if he had not posted about it..
Basically, the fellow who was the official Shabbos goy, a Romanian cleaner named Boris, for the Nadvorna Rebbe, and then later after a 3 year trip to Romania for the Seret Vishnitz community of Haifa, was determined to actually be a Jew. They determined his Jewishness by overhearing him talk about how his mother had lit candles on Friday nights, and then later hearing him singing Jewish songs he had seemingly learned in his youth. After an investigation, the hassidim brought the information to Rav Zoldan, the rav posek of the community, who continued the investigation and decided that Boris is Jewish and publicized the information to that effect. Boris was now out of a job, as they had to find a new Shabbos Goy.
That's a great story. The only thing I wonder about is if the general haredi community will agree with the determination that Boris is a Jew. I wonder this because Rav Zoldan is the name behind the OU mehadrin hechsher used by Fleish chickens, and much of the general haredi community claims that this is an unreliable hechsher and does not actually keep mehadrin standards... If Rav Zoldan is not reliable, Boris might not be a Jew..

Who wants an unreliable Jew as a shabbos goy? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI recently heard from a close friend that an Arab taxi driver who worked for many Jews on Shabbat as a "shabbos goy" was discovered to be JEwish, yes, his mother had married an Arab.
