Which of these are Amalek

I am sorry, but I no longer know who I am supposed to kill.

About six months ago one influential rabbi called Dati Leumi people "Amalek" .

And yesterday a different influential rav, one close with Rav Shteinman, called followers of Rav Shmuel Auerbach and the Yerushalmi Litvishe group "descendants of Amalek". (source: Kikar)

Maybe they are cousins.

I am at a loss. How do I decide which is really amalek? Do I have a mitzva to be machmir and kill both, just in case? Maybe we apply the concept of "Eilu vEilu Divrei Elokim Chaim" and assume they are both right? Would killing both be a chumra or a kula?

Note: I do not advocate the killing of any of these people. It just seems to be what the rabbis are telling us to do. It seems people don't know how to behave and talk in any way that is not extreme and outrageous..

  1. Great questions - I guess you could say we're all agog to know the answer. :-)

  2. This post is one of Rechilus, I'm sure you'll notice if made aware of it. As if there's nothing else to write about. Sorry to ruffle your feathers on this issue, but it bears consideration at least.

  3. Killing Amalek is a community mitzvah, not a personal one especially in this day and age. If you know 100% Amalek is in front of you, unless you are a soldier with license and order to kill, you are not allowed to take life.

  4. yes. the big problem is rechilus. not the calling of other Jews, even frum jews, amalek due to a political dispute.

  5. Why choose?

    Safek d'Oraysa l'chumra.

(Unless safek d'Orayssa l'Chumra mean that I have to be machmir on Lo Tirzach rather than Harigas Amalek.)
