Rabbi, Student Arrested For Trying To Slaughter Donkey As Sacrifice For Sins

  -- Jpost

Intrigued?

here's the story:
Jerusalem police arrested a rabbi and his student on Friday for trying to slaughter and sacrifice a female donkey.
The 54-year-old rabbi and his student aged 24, were arrested near the of the Tomb of Samuel the prophet which is located in the West Bank north of Jerusalem.
The two suspects purchased the female donkey, or jenny, from a local Palestinian and were later caught on camera by another local trying to slaughter the animal, police said. The man filming the incident alerted the police.
The suspects, residents of Jerusalem, confessed that they were slaughtering the jenny as a sacrifice for their sins.
The Jerusalem Magistrates court was deciding Friday whether to remand the suspects into custody.
The donkey was brought to a Ministry of Agriculture facility in the Jordan Valley.

  2. Considering they would have had no intention of eating it, I would consider Tza'ar Ba'alei Chaim to be a perfectly valid charge.

    1. Is there any law against killing an animal without a constructive purpose?

    2. In many countries, yes. I don't know about Israel. And the Torah does, so I'd be OK with the State smacking them around.

  3. Since when is a donkey acceptable for a qorban? Since when can it be brought anywhere accept Har HaBayith?

What am I missing here? A rabbi, or a "rabbi?"

    1. Obviously the "rabbi" is a nut - I am not sure what business the police have here, though.

    2. Good points. It's an ongoing battle between state authority and Torah authority. If we ever make heads of tails of this case, it still may turn out to be a classic example of this.

    1. I thought it sounded like a cover up of this, but 1) it's only a male, right? and 2) It can be redeemed with money, no? which seems like an easier option in Jerusalem, with leftists breathing down their necks.

    2. Anyway it's preferable to use money - מצות פדייה קודמת למצוות עריפה.

    3. Yes, albeit, perhaps, not as exciting. ;-)

    4. Peter Chamor is not done with money -- it is done with a sheep. There are some Youtube videos showing someone doing it. (One was in Hawaii for some reason.)
