- US Secretary of State John Kerry
ok
(I would note that the US administration did not simply brush off Netanyahu's statement during elections about Arabs going to vote and about a two state solution saying comments are made publicly but things evolve differently. Then they insisted on turning it into a crisis and refused to believe Netanyahu, even after he publicly apologized.)

Watch for American condemnation of the new Bezeq commercial as well. After all, Iran is America's newest best friend and we don't want them to get upset.

ReplyDeleteGood point, although Kerry may have meant his comment in the context of an extremist/radical society like Iran as opposed to a democratic nation like Israel. I often think about this when people (correctly) note the hypocrisy of the UN, media etc. in slamming Israel whenever there is any Palestinian civilian loss of life or human rights concern and more or less ignoring similar or far more severe human rights issues in countries like Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan etc. There most definitely are double standards at play but Israel portrays itself as a Western, democratic nation that protects human rights and upholds democratic values. The other countries mentioned earlier do not.
I am not an Israel basher and believe that Israel does a better job upholding democratic values in a very turbulent climate than most countries do in much easier environments. However, I personally think we should reasonably expect Israel to be held to a higher standard than most of its neighbors (perhaps Turkey is an exception).
