Haredi parties and relevant Ministries coming to agreement on draft law

The Haredi parties, Justice Ministry and Defense Ministry are coming to an agreement about the draft law that is to be amended.

As part of the coalition agreements, Netanyahu promised the Haredi parties that the draft law, clamping criminal sanctions on anyone who refuses to be drafted, would be canceled. The problem is that Canceling the law flat out would put the Supreme Court in the position of voiding the cancellation, due to bringing the situation back to one of inequality. The Justice and Defense ministries opposed the cancellation, knowing it would not stand up in court. So, they have been working on a reasonable alternative.

It seems the alternative has been discovered.

And the best part of it is that it is not being forced down anyone's throat, but it is being agreed upon by all parties involved.

The agreement between the JM, DM and Haredi parties that is formulating has the acclimation period extended another 3 years, until 2020 instead of 2017, along with sanctions being lessened to not being automatic but only upon the decision of the Minister of Defense.

Obviously, the Minister of Defense will never choose to apply criminal sanctions when Haredi parties are members of the ruling coalition. As well, By 2020 they will have plenty of time to extend the acclimation period again.

But still, the Haredi parties, if they do sign off on this or on any agreement whatever the terms might be, are in essence agreeing to a version of the draft law.

Besides for agreeing to not bolt the government over this, they are agreeing to comply with the Israeli draft to the IDF, under the [soon to be] new terms.

I think this is an historic moment.
