Rabbi Chaim Flom Z'L (one of my Rabeim in Yeshiva) used to drive along the bus route when he travelled in order to give people rides. When the community realized he was taking the bus because his car had died, they they stepped up to buy him a newer version (aprox. 10 years old instead of 20) of his car so he could continue with this particular mitzvah.
