To obtain the electric bike driver's license, the person would have to take safety lessons along with learning the laws of the road and traffic, along with the regular theory exams. The law would also limit the licensing to a maximum cost of 100nis.
Minister of Internal Security Gild Erdan supports the licensing requirement, and points to a sharp increase in fatal accidents involving electric bikes. Erdan also wants the law to include electric scooters (aka korkinets). Minister of Transportation Yisrael Katz, on the other hand, does not support the law and thinks the existing laws simply need to be enforced, in addition to increased education through the schools and transferring enforcement responsibility to the municipalities.
Gafni's proposal is going to be brought to the table today in the Ministerial Legislative Committee.
