Rav Zilbershtein's kavod shabbos

This story from Rav Zilbershtein is going around, seemingly because of the recent increase in attacks on Haredi soldiers and the various police actions against the attackers..
note:: I don't know if this story is a recent one or just one pulled out of the archives because of its timeliness..

basically, a soldier showed up in Rav Zilbershtein's shul on Shabbos dressed in his army fatigues. After chatting with him for a few moments, the rav instructed the gabbai to give the soldier an aliyah. Astonished, the kehilla pressed the rav to explain. Rav Zilbershtein explained that he asked the soldier why he is dresse din uniform and not in Shabbos clothes. The soldier explained that while he had become religious, his mother still was not, and out of her love for the IDF she launders his uniform when he comes home - but in order to prevent her form laundering the uniform on Shabbos, he decided to wear it on Shabbos! That is why he came to shul in his uniform - to prevent his mother from doing the laundry on Shabbos. Rav Zilbershtein said there is no greater kavod shabbos than what this soldier did.

  1. I don't see why this is such a beautiful story. The message is that were it not for the particular reason of his wearing the uniform, it would be unthinkable to give a uniformed soldier an aliyah.
