The 2018 STEM CELLS Young Investigator Award has been awarded to UW Medicine's Benjamin “Beno” Freedman for his groundbreaking work with organoids in studying kidney structure and disease. The award, which carries a $10,000 prize, is given annually to an early-career scientist whose paper is judged to be of worldwide significance by a global jury. Freedman was senior author on the paper, “Gene-Edited Human Kidney Organoids Reveal Mechanisms of Disease in Podocyte Development,” published December 2017 in STEM CELLS.
