Just when you thought that the community had finally decided Berland was beyond the pale and finally fully rejected him, you get a slap of reality in the face.
The news is reporting that head of Shas party Aryeh Deri struck a deal with the Shuvu banim people. In exchange for them instructing their people to vote for Shas, rather than abstain from voting altogether, Deri will obtain a letter from one of the rabbonim on the Rabbinic Council of Shas instructing people to not talk about the Berland situation.
Hush money. Just keep it quiet. We want you to vote for us, so we will tell our people to not talk about the heinous crimes your leader did.
Nobody is quite sure how many votes Shuvu Banim is worth. Some say Berland himself has said in the past that they are several hundred strong, while others in Shuvu Banim claim up to 6000.
Despicable. Dancing with the devil. I hope they realize who they are getting into bed with.

Proof positive that Shas's Rabbinic council is comprised of רשעים גמורים.
ReplyDeleteDidn't previous Shas leader give out kemayim amulets to vote for Shas.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, if you don't vote for Shas (or Agudah or UTJ) you lose your Olam haBah, each party claims for themselves.

ReplyDeleteSomething about this does not hang together. Hush money usually refers to covering up some bad deed. If something is "hushed" no one knows about it and hence no one can do anything about it.
Berland is a criminal being prosecuted by the authorities. His deeds are well known and widely reported. So who cares whether some followers of Shas talk about him or not? Let's say they stop talking about him -- will that get him off the hook in his prosecution? Will some people say, gee, he must be innocent, since Shas followers are not tallking about it? I doubt it very much.
I don't talk about him at all, but I know he is a crook whom I hope will get some serious jail time. No one paid me any hush money, I just see no point in talking about it. Let the police and prosecutors do their job.
