-- MK Yitzchak Pindrus (UTJ)
1. Pindrus is probably right - the Haredi hechshers will benefit, get bigger, make more money, get more authority, from the kashrut reform turning Rabbanut into a regulator, and the Rabbanut probably wont authorize Tzohar to certify kashrut.
2. Even though Pindrus is probably right, the free market is almost always better for everybody. Monopolies are good for nobody except for the people who control the monopoly. If people want Badatzes to replace the Rabbanut, give the people Badatzes. If people want a basic level of kashrut, I am sure there will be some organization that will step and provide what the market demands.
3. I do not think Masouda in Sderot and Shimon in Dimona will not have kashrut available to them. the market will provide what is demanded. If people want to eat kosher, an organization will be happy to provide that. It won't be the Rabbanut because they will be regulators, but it will be a different organization

UTJ doesn't care about anyone but charedim. And that's being generous- they care about the party.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention that this is really condescending. What, masorati people can't take care of themselves?
Also, you have to love the disgusting way he won't even refer to R' Stav by name.
Pindrus is categorically proving they do care about others by pointing out the obvious - for the Badaztim the new rule would benefit them financially but because it would hurt the level of kashrut for the general public the charedim oppose this proposal. Don't let prior bias color that fact.
DeleteIt would hurt the UTJ because they and Shas control the Rabbinate but not the Badatzes. Simple as that.
DeleteIt's all about the patronage, not the Kashrut. The Chareidi parties want to control the Rabbanut since they then control all the jobs in Kashrut, etc., that are controlled by the local Rabbanuyot. That means jobs for their voters, as mashgichim,etc...
DeleteNachum, that is factually incorrect. The vast majority of Badatzes are as a rule totally in line with Shas and UTJ. The major Badatz not connected to the Charedi parties is the Eidah, but my guess is they also support the idea of the keeping the status quo with the Rabbanut because they makes it easier the public in general to keep basic kashrut.
ReplyDeleteAligned doesn't equal "giving them money." And the Eidah doesn't even know Shimon from Dimona exists.
DeleteThe Haredi MKs are worried that these reforms are the start of a slippery slope to rid the State of Israel of all of its Jewish aspects
ReplyDeleteIf "Jewish aspects" was code for something very different, sure.
Deletein general UTJ people believe they are the only ones concerned about or able to ensure Judaism is being protected. Not because they care more, but nobody else is qualified to or would be protecting the right judaism. this is in addition to the issues of jobs, power, money etc which are all factors but more minor factors
ReplyDeleteToday I heard Rav Shmuel Eliyahu from Tzefat (not exactly someone connected to UTJ...) state that for the charedi consumer buying mehadrin this proposal will have no effect. But for the larger public who has been able to easily keep kosher without effort, this proposal is a disaster.
DeleteSounds like the same point MK Pindrus was making.
Yes. But not for the same reason. I agree that for UTJ, it's only about loss of money and influence.
DeleteThere will be new CRs in a few short years. Hopefully the new government won't have to kowtow to charedi interests in appointing the committee that decides.
ReplyDeleteAnd hopefully, the various DLs and RZs interests and rabbonim won't split the vote.
they generally find a way to squander any potential they have and mess things up. We'll see what happens
