proposed law: defacing images of women in public

MK Yulia Malinovsky (Yisrael Beyteynu) has proposed a law that has now been approved by the Knesset Legislative Committee and will move to the Knesset to be voted on.

According to Malinovsky's proposal, anyone destroying signs based on gender in the public sphere, ie someone defaces or rips a billboard or advertisement with the image of a woman, would be subject to a fine of up to 29,200nis.

That is an awfully specific number - I am not sure why she didnt make it 30k, or 25k, or even 29k.

Malinovsky says there has been a sharp increase in the number of signs being destroyed or defaced. I guess she thinks threat of a heavy monetary fine will be a deterrent. I am not sure they know how to find the perpetrators of these acts - most of the time. Occasionally they catch someone in the act, but I don't think that is usually the case.

  1. I suppose it would apply to ripping off a billboard of a man as well, no?

    1. presumably, theoretically I guess. posters dont generally get ripped down or defaced because of an image of a man (though maybe they do because of who the person is), so theoretically but it seems less likely to happen
