We are legislating it because it is not healthy for the Israeli democracy to have a person ruling it for more than 8 years. We see and hear these days in the courts how extended rule leads to corruption. We are putting this to an end.
I have heard the claim that this law does not exist in any parliamentary democracy. Well, in no other parliamentary democracy has a Prime Minister ruled despite having three serious indictments served for crimes committed while in office.
-- Foreign Minister Yair Lapid
I dont think most people are worried that without this law Lapid or Bennett might remain in office for more than 8 years...

His last sentence proves it is against Bibi.
ReplyDeleteYour last sentence is spot on!
Lapid's reasoning is faulty. Other parliamentary democracies don't have this law because it is not needed. Margaret Thatcher was elected three times as PM of the UK, and she is generally accounted to have been a succesful PM.
ReplyDeleteHis real complaint is that the voters in Israel, or enough of them, are not impressed by the indictments. Either they are insensitive to corruption, or they view the indictments as basless and politically motivated, or they think all politicians are corrupt, so it makes no difference.
The “veil of ignorance” is a moral reasoning device designed to promote impartial decision making by denying decision makers access to potentially biasing information about who will benefit most or least from the available options.

Chas v'sholom, they should be in office for that long. Doubt if anyone wants that.
