Public Transportation Rate Reform going into effect soon

Minister of Transportation Meirav Michaeli today introduced a new reform for public transportation. When it goes into effect (some time this summer), anyone 75 years old and up will travel for free. Senior citizens above the age of 62 will be able to a country-wide monthly pass for 112.5nis.

The price for a ride within the city will be dropped to 5.5nis instead of the current 6nis. Prices right now are based on complicated calculations for different areas around the country but will now be based on distance - with rates fluctuating at different distance markers, such as 15km, 40km, and 120km..

Disabled and youth (up to 18), along with people aged 60+, will receive 50% discounts. Current discounts for soldiers, students, police and sherut leumi will remain as is.

There are other rate changes as well for different types of monthly packages. Overall it looks like public transportation will get significantly cheaper for a lot of people.
