shameless

I dont know many of the personalities on the Left and involved with Achim Laneshek or Koach Kaplan (obviously I have become familiar with some of the main names, but not most of the people involved there), so I dont know who was behind or who was actively involved in tonight's protest in Mea Shearim.

It is a shame they are letting extremists take over the movement and do things that do not advance their goals in any way and will only hinder them. There was absolutely no purpose and nothing to gain by the protest they held tonight in Mea Shearim and all it was good for was to generate some "action" and violence and increase hatred among the two sides for each other.

I have no problem with protests (legal, police sanctioned) even during war. That's part of living in a democracy. Tonight's was just shameful and purposeless.

Dudi Amsalem

Minister Dudi Amsalem just filed a petition with the Supreme Court to draft the Arab community in Israel to the IDF.

Amsalem thinks he is standing up for and helping his coalition partners, the Haredi community, by filing this petition, as if he is pointing out a massive hypocrisy. Amsalem says the Israeli Arab community gets benefits just like everyone else in Israel but does not share in the burden of army service. And like the Supreme Court just ordered the Haredi community to be drafted for lack of a law exempting them, the Arab community should be drafted as well. The Arab community does not get automatic exemptions, but the IDF does not send them draft notices.

I am not sure who Amsalem thinks he is hurting or helping. He is a member of the government, and has been for a long time. If the Arabs are not drafted it is because his governments chose not to (for security reasons). So now he wants to force his government to draft them? he could probably have just gone to PM Netanyahu and said if this is what they are doing to the Haredim let's also draft the Arabs. He didnt have to go to the Supreme Court. They are not being drafted not because they refuse to be drafted and go to the army for religious reasons but because the Israeli government chooses to not draft them because the Israeli government thinks as a whole they cant be trusted regarding security, dual loyalties perhaps or whatnot.

And if they are not being drafted for security reasons, Amsalem thinks getting back at the Supreme Court is more important than the security of Israel? He's thinking I am going to show them how hypocritical they are and I am going to put us all at risk in doing so!?

If the government thinks they have ways to draft the Arabs and they can do it without being a security risk, I am all for it. I think the Arabs should be required to do at least National Service if they dont go to the army. I think most Haredim should do at least National Service as well. Again, Amsalem is part of the government - he does not need to go to fight in the Supreme Court to do this, just pass a law. The only reason the Supreme Court got involved is because for years Netanyahu and his various governments have refused, or failed, to pass a law for the draft to make a legal arrangement with the Haredi community. This government is all about personal benefits and games instead of doing the real work.

Quote of the Day

My position that we can no longer come to terms with entire sectors being exempted from army service is well known. Together with that, the obstinacy of the Supreme Court to obligate the government to change a situation that nobody has been able to change for 70 years specifically now, during an ongoing war, is infuriating, idiocy and plays into the hands of the enemies of Israel.

  -- MK Hanoch Midiwsky (Likud)

He's not wrong, but.....

he is not wrong, the world wont come to an end if they give a 6 month extension or whatnot.

On the other hand it is not the Supreme Court's fault that PM Netanyahu has done his utmost to avoid legislating this and has repeatedly pushed it off to later...

Yitzy Spinner - Titchadesh (Official Video)

It’s been four weeks since I donated a kidney to a complete stranger. In the days leading up to surgery, I struggled to put my thoughts and emotions in order. I finally did what comes naturally to me - I sat down at the piano and composed this song. It flowed from a place deep within. I recorded it four days before surgery with tears in my eyes. The surgery itself was on February 12, 2024. The message of the song is a blessing that I received that I want share with everyone who listens. Titchadesh is a word that can’t be directly translated to English. It loosely means ‘use it in good health’, or more accurately, ‘it should renew you’, or ‘you should have a Renewal.’ I sought a blessing from a Rabbi in the weeks leading to surgery and he wisely said “When you donate a piece of yourself, your body is transformed. You should be blessed to be not as one who is healthy even without two kidneys, but as one who is whole and complete, in your renewed self that has nothing lacking. Enjoy your new body - Titchadesh!” By recording this song and its message, I restate this sentiment for myself and share it with my recipient. I wish for him to live a long and happy life with his renewed body. May the kidney that is new to him keep him healthy for many years to come and may he feel renewed with each passing day. I hope he hears this song and feels as inspired as I do - to thank The One Above for the gift of health and for the opportunity to wake up each morning and smile. Titchadesh!

Bring them home now!

Ari Rosenstein asks a good question:

I would extend the question a bit and suggest that considering the UN resolution just passed, Israel should cut off the current negotiations for a ceasefire deal with the exchange of 40 Israeli hostages for the proposed 700 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Why should there be an exchange of anything to get the hostages back and to obtain a ceasefire if both sides must adhere to a ceasefire and hostage return anyway?

------------------------------------------------------

send in the troops

So, once we went this route and have this crisis, whether you think it was a crisis created by the USA or one by Israel, if we are rejecting the United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire (and return of the hostages), does that mean Israel will immediately send in the troops to Rafah?

If the troops dont get sent in right away at this point, what was the point of this crisis?

When do you think Israel will send in the troops?

------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------

Resolution questions

The relevant clause in the United Nations resolution passed today reads:

1. Demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain;

My question for the United Nations, or any international legal experts out there, is... are these considered separate issues or are they tied to each other by being in the same clause? Meaning, if Israel ceases fire as is being demanded of it, does Hamas have to release the hostages, and if they dont then Israel can go back to firing? Or will world pressure then move to Hamas? and vice versa? And being that this is for Ramadan, as specified in the clause, even if Israel ceases fire now, in two weeks when Ramadan is over it will be acceptable to restart the war?

There has been tremendous pressure on Israel; regarding Rafah in recent weeks, leading up to this resolution and the USA abstaining rather than vetoing - where is the massive world pressure on Hamas for their holding the hostages? Now that this resolution passed will we start to see an increase in pressure o Hamas?

And, a general question: the resolution says the demand for ceasefire is for Ramadan. That means in two weeks it will all be ok again. So, if Israel has waited this long anyway without going into Rafah, what's the big deal to wait another two weeks?

wasn't bluffing

And, PM Netanyahu has followed through with his promise/threat. Netanyahu canceled the delegation to Washington. Defense Minister Galant is in Washington already and will continue with his scheduled meetings, but the delegation led by Ron Dermer has been called off.

Netanyahu was not bluffing. Let's see where this goes next

ceasefire and hostage resolution passed

ok, let's see what happens now.

The United Nations Security Council just passed its vote 14-0 for a ceasefire, and for the release of the hostages. While the two are not conditioned one on the other, it was passed in one resolution rather than in two separate resolutions. The United States abstained from the vote and did not veto. The resolution passed 14-0.

Was his bluff called or was he serious?

PM Netanyahu now cannot not cancel sending his delegation to Washington.

Can either side de-escalate this conflict or are we looking into the abyss?

gotta know when to hold em

Wow. I dont know if this increasing gap between the USA and Israel right now is unprecedented or not, but it is getting insane.

For some reason the USA is expected to not use its veto power in today's United Nations session in which the UN will pass a ceasefire resolution against Israel. The US is suggesting its strategy is to pass a ceasefire resolution and also a "return the hostages" resolution, each to stand on its own.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu is threatening, or maybe warning, the USA that if the US delegation does not veto the resolution, Israel will cancel sending the delegation to Washington for meetings and bring the delegation back to Israel. While I am not sure that is quite the threat Netanyahu thinks it is, it is still a significant threat on its own and a sign of the widening gap and deteriorating relations.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next day or two (and in the grander scheme of things over the next several months). All we can do is hope that it turns out for the best and that Netanyahu is The Gambler, knowing when to hold em and knowing when to fold em..

Interesting Psak: Collecting for Tots

Rav Yitzchak Zilbershtein, in advance of Purim, answered a series of questions posed to him regarding halachos of yeshiva boys collecting money on Purim for the "tat" of their yeshivas - "tat" being an acronym for "tomchei torah" which is a yeshiva fund to help the needier students.. below are some of the questions and answers..

While this isnt relevant to the masses, it is still interesting...

Q: When entering a building to knock on doors for collecting money, is it permitted to turn on the stairwell lights and to use the elevator or is it stealing from the residents? And if permission is asked of one of the residents, is that enough or do all residents need to be asked?

A: the light is definitely allowed to be used, as it is there for anyone entering the building. Collecting money is a legitimate purpose for entering the building and therefore the light can be used.
The elevator is more complicated as it is not uncommon for elevators breaking down on Purim due to misuse and/or overuse. Some buildings put up a sign to not use the elevator on Purim. A building without such a sign - the elevator can be used but one should be careful to not misuse it or doing anything unusual and get rowdy int he elevator.  If damage is caused, you would have to pay for it.

Q: can money be collected in a shul while people are learning?
A: the learners should not be disturbed for this

Q: Can mincha on Purim be davened while in costume without a hat and jacket or should they be careful to only daven with a hat and jacket?
A: if it is respectable dress even as a costume, such as clothes people normally wear, for example a Lithuanian Jew dressing as a chassid or vice versa, that is fine. If it is a costume that is festive but not how one normally respectfully dresses, one should not daven like that as one would not stand before a king like this

Q: should money be collected in a large group to accomplish the concept of "brov am"?
A: this is a very important mitzva, and tzeaka is collected by two people together. There is no need for more than two people. And, breaking into many small groups of two each allows more people to be reached and potentially more to be collected.

Q: can one go through a red light or cross where there is no crosswalk and be assured to be safe because they are in the process of doing a mitzva?
A: chas veshalom. Just the opposite, on Purim people might have been drinking and the danger is ever-present. One should be more careful about the traffic laws. And in addition to that, violating the laws will cause a chilul hashem. And at times, kids see adults crossing against traffic without crosswalks and might follow along, and who will take responsibility for damages?

Q: Normally people should not take donations from women - what is the status of this today?
A: there is no clear rule for this. Normal amounts given can be accepted as it is considered a small amount and not unusual. Especially because women are involved in business today and running the house, the husband is ok with it. It would not be appropriate for bochurim to ask a woman explicitly if her husband is ok with it. They should say we will send a thank you letter to your husband, and if she doesnt protest that it is clear her husband is ok with it.

Q: someone collecting money for the tzedaka discovered some of the money if counterfeit. Should he throw it away or pass it along being likely it wont be caught?
A: counterfeit money has no value so using it in exchange for something else is theft. It is not allowed to be transferred to a non-Jew either. The money should be destroyed

Q: Is there any law about not skipping any buildings and going in order when collecting, so as not to pass over a mitzva?
A: there is no mitzva to collect from any specific building, so this isnt an issue

Q: if a boy wont be able to learn while collecting is that ok because he is doing a mitzva or should he not go out collecting if it will mean he wont learn anything?
A:
the role of a yeshiva boy is to learn Torah. Additionally, one of the mitzvas of the day is to learn a little bit before the seuda. It is difficult to say a boy out collecting is busy with the mitzva all day and therefore exempt from learning. he often takes care of his own needs throughout the day and if he would get a phone call he would surely answer it, so he should definitely also take some time out to learn Torah.
And especially with the mitzva of collecting tzedaka, it requires a lot of responsibility and fear of Heaven, as the potential for problems is great. Learning Torah is part of the collecting tzedaka so it should be done properly and taken seriously.

they cannot put two words together

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reportedly asked, in a session of the Foreign and Defense Committee, about the state of Israel's public relations in the USA..

PM Netanyahu responded saying that it obviously is not as good as it should be. He denied the reason is due to lack of funding but said that there are not enough good people with a command of the English language. Netanyahu said "I am surrounded by people who cannot put two words together".

Let's not forget that Netanyahu recently tried to fire the consummate professional Eylon Levy, for no good reason, and only left it at leaving him in a limited role because of the public outcry.

And let's not forget that while Netanyahu says he doesnt have enough good people and the people surrounding him cant put two words together, he himself is the one who chooses whom to surround himself with and who to appoint to these positions. Does he want specifically less-qualified people so that he looks better when he does the talking? Does he not appoint qualified people, and try to fire the ones that have been appointed, because they do a good job and it isnt all on him?

save from the Jews

The population of Ireland is a bit of 5 million people, as of 2021.

The Jewish population was steady at about 2500, as of 2016.

That comes to the Jews being about 0.05% of the Irish population.

Yet somehow the Jews are a threat to Ireland.

The following sign was hung over a St Patrick's Day parade in Cincinnati...

Are the Jews of Ireland really such a threat to the country despite their miniscule numbers?

Should the Irish of Cincinnati be more worried about Cincinnati being saved from the Jews - Cincinnati has a population of about 308000, with the Jewish population at about 32000. That's about 10%, far greater than the population of Jews in Ireland. And if we look at Ohio in total, the Jews are about 1.3% of Ohio with about 117000 of about 12 million...

And with the Irish population of Cincinnati hanging in at about 11%, or about 13% of Ohio, perhaps we should save Ohio/Cincinnati form the Irish. They seem to be more of a threat (not sure of what) than the Jews are to Ireland...

Interesting Psak: tone down Purim celebrations

Rav Dovid Yosef, Rav of Har Nof and candidate for Chief Rabbi of Israel, has issued a psak in light of the ongoing war and the approaching Purim holiday.

Rav Yosef said that with the country at war, with daily reports of fallen soldiers and the situation being difficult, this year people should celebrate Purim at home and not celebrate in public. All the requirements and mitzvahs of Purim should be fulfilled as necessary, but the public sphere should be toned down - there should not be dancing and celebration in the streets. We need to be very careful.

Rav Yosef said that when the general public sees the religious celebrating as if the troubles of the Jewish People are not connected to them, it does not look good. It causes a chilul hashem. The rabbonim and rosh yeshivas and the public in general should do whatever is possible to keep the parties to a low profile this Purim... we daven and we feel the pain of the soldiers and their families and the hostages, and how can we then celebrate as if nothing happened. At least in public we should be very careful and not allow it to appear as if we do not care for the troubles the nation is experiencing..

B'ezrat Hashem Nenatseach Ari Goldwag & Zevi Kaufman (video)

The title track of Ari Goldwag’s latest album, a duet with Zevi Kaufman, speaks of the secret weapon of our soldiers which is in our spiritual power, as represented by the power of tefillin, which so many soldiers are using in their battle, and our sages say causes the nations to fear us. Zevi brought this concept to Ari and it forms the core of the song. Ari composed the intro section of the song ״בעזרת ה׳ ננצח״ at the request of the soldier Elisha Loewenstern 3 weeks into the war of חרבות ברזל. He asked for a song which would help strengthen the soldiers in their עבודת ה׳ as it manifests in their battle in Gaza. 6 weeks later Elisha Hy'd fell in battle. We decided to connect this theme with the tefillin battle song, and to dedicate the song in Elisha’s memory. Elisha’s son Eitan Loewenstern features in the music video. Quote of the Day

Nothing will happen if we leave people in their positions for a few more months. This will cause difficulty with the investigations. The General Staff had a total failure on October 7 and that brought upon us one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the State, and it did not just fail on October 7 but also was a total failure for years leading up to it with a conception that collapsed... This General Staff will not shape the future leadership of the IDF. It cannot appoint the generals that will fix the IDF. There is no faith in them for this. We support them now completely to win the war, and nothing else.

-- Finance Minister Betzalel Smotritch, regarding the possibility that the current Chief of Staff and his team will make a round of appointments now of new generals and commanders.

Smotritch makes a fair point. Too bad the journalist he was talking to was not bold enough to ask about the government part in this that led to the failures of October 7 with the conception that collapsed, and perhaps we should not let them make appointments either. We are trusting them now completely but only to win the war and that's it. The government made up of people who came up with and support the conception of Hamas being necessary and good (to undermine the PA), that Hamas is deterred, that Hamas is paid off and wont make trouble, is also not trusted to shape the government and make decisions as to how this will be fixed.

manna from heaven

Look at that.... manna falls from heaven and they make an unboxing video to show what is included in the humanitarian aid and what is wrong with it... as an aside, how starving can they be if they can complain about their free food? the worst meal he ever had? The Palestinians actually sound pretty Jewish...

keep our politics out of your mouth

Even if I mostly agree with what Chuck Schumer said, it was wildly inappropriate for a member of a government of a foreign country to be talking about what the Israeli government should do politically. It is not his place to talk about that and it comes off as if the USA is dictating political policy to a vassal state.

Israel is an independent country. Israel does not appreciate political meddling by foreign powers, at least not when done so blatantly.

Netanyahu is a problem for the USA, but that is a problem they have to overcome via policy. Netanyahu is a problem for Israel, and Israelis have to overcome that problem politically. Israelis dont want [overt] help from the USA in the political arena.

Schumer might be right but it isnt his business to meddle into.

who dat?

Somebody Jewish won a prize at the Oscars for making a good movie and he said something about being Jewish and criticized Israel.

While I have seen a lot of criticism of him and what he said, I really have no opinion. I dont know who he is, I dont remember his name, I dont know what he said, I didnt watch the video of his speech and I didnt watch the Oscars. I simply dont care. Thats how irrelevant he is to me, just as I am sure I am irrelevant in his eyes.

Stop propping up the actors and producers of movies as if they have some inherent level of importance more than anyone else and that their opinions hold weight. They are entertainers. Their opinions are just that - their opinions. I dont have to care what they think about politics, about Israel, about Judiasm, about anything else. Same for athletes and other celebrities.
