Rav Elyashiv Phones MK Moshe Gafni

Kikar has an interesting exchange, all recorded with the audio clip available, between Rav Elyashiv and MK Moshe Gafni.

The Bikur Cholim Hospital is on the verge of closing its doors for the final time. They were recently give an extension, allowing them another month to find a solution to try to keep the hospital open. The hospital board went to Rav Elyashiv to try to get his support to find a way to stay open.

Rav Elyashiv and his people responded positively, and Rav Efrati "suggested" that MK Moshe Gafni be put to the task of finding the solution.

When they got Gafni on the phone, Rav Elyashiv spoke with him and there was an interesting exchange that took place. Rav Elyashiv told him that he is being given the task because he can get people to do things. Rav Elyashiv said "when you bang on the table, even I am scared!" Rav Elyashiv said he would drive him crazy until he agrees, saying that he would call him every hour and pester him until he agrees. Then Rav Elyashiv said 'I told you originally not to go to the Knesset. You went anyway. Now at least finish the job."

In the phone call you can also hear him suggest that the hospital is very important to the yeeshiv hayashan of Yerushalayim. Rav Elyashiv suggests to Gafni that he persuade the government to keep it open by calling it a cultural center, because the Knesset loves to promote culture.

Listen to the audio.

Nothing really all that exciting, but I thought it was an interesting exchange between them.

  1. Forgive a naive comment, but does Rav Elyashiv shlit"a know about this recording? Was someone's phone tapped? How did they get both parties on one recording? Didn't he have to give permission for a personal conversation to be recorded? As well as to be made public? Is this an invasion of privacy of sorts? Because of the nature of my question, I didn't listen to the link.

I don't understand how they did this?

  3. Well that really puts the lie to the claim that R' Eliashiv doesn't really know what's flying.

  4. On Kikar Shabbos it says Rav Efrati (הגר"י) spoke to Gafni not Rav Eliyashiv.
