Looking for marriage via the announcements in shul

According to a story reported by NRG, a woman got up in shul and announced that she needs help finding a husband. The woman, a 33 year old social worker, got up in her shul in Jerusalem, a shul called "Reut", and asked the gabbai to announce that she is single and needs the help of everyone there to find a husband.

The announcement was supposedly pretty shocking. it is definitely out of the ordinary. Some thought she went too far, while others thought she did the right thing, and she needs to do what she can to find the right guy.

She further explained, via an interview in NRG (after they tracked her down and she eventually agreed to be interviewed) that because of her age she has been considering to go the route that is becoming increasingly popular of having a child as a single mother, before her biological clock runs out. She decided she would give it another push before she goes that route, and she realized she has to do something to meet more people, and that she has nothing to be embarrassed about.

It is definitely unusual, but good for her. When stuck in a rut, when nothing seems to be working, sometimes doing something dramatic, something out of the ordinary, something that breaks the routine, is just what the doctor orders. Maybe somebody sitting in the shul did not realize she was single, or had not thought of her for a friend of his, or whatever, but now will make that extra effort to set them up. Hopefully she will meet new people through this initiative, and if that is what it takes, then good for her for being bold enough to try it.

I almost feel bad for her, the way the incident is related. She almost comes out seeming desperate - ready to give up. I don't know if she is or is not, but it's good that she did this, and hopefully something will come of it.

  1. She sure sounds desperate and I don't blame her. She really has nothing to lose.

  3. I expect that if this woman successfully now finds her husband more women will do the same. Until then, it might just be a trickle.
