The announcement goes on that Richard Peres, a city councilman, contacted the police and the Ministry of Interior and warned them to be on the lookout for fraud (people trying to get other people's id cards with their pictures, perhaps?). The police subsequently sent down an officer to inspect everyone in line and check their id cards.
Richard Peres is not known for his love for haredim (though I dont know if he is anti-haredi), and is also the main person behind the idea of splitting Bet Shemesh into two cities. With these people doing nothing wrong, refreshing your identity card is a perfectly legal activity, there was no place to bring the police into the matter. The police should have told him to jump in the lake or else come to them with actual claims of a crime.
I understand people are jumpy and prefer to err on the side of caution, considering the situation, but that does not give anyone a right to treat innocent people like criminals.
The only justification would be that these people were brought to the office by activists from the Koach party - the party that was responsible for at least much of the fraud (or attempts at fraud) in the previous elections, and maybe that justified raising suspicions. Perhaps the activists should have been questioned rather than the people refreshing their ID cards.

I want to see a report on Rabbi Frldman's drasha.
ReplyDeleteI wasnt there. if anyone wants to submit a report, write it up and email me at israeli.jew @ gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteanyways, I am curious - why do you want a report on rabbi feldmans speech? I havent reported on any rabbis speeches for elections, so why do you want this one specifically?
ReplyDeleteI just got permission to take what someone who was present wrte about it. I will post it shortly.
ReplyDeleteRafi,
ReplyDeleteDo you have any comments about the alleged building violations on Eli Cohen' property? Has the campaign made any official announcements?
I have no comment yet. I havent seen any official response, other than the construction was done by the previous owner, rav louk, the head of agudas yisrael in bet shemesh, and the house remains as is, as it was purchased 26 years ago.
DeleteI dont know any more than this at this point.
what about the illegal building of Balyash's house?
ReplyDeleteI dont know about this.
Deletethe only thing that made me curious on this issue that you touched on, was the article about cohens alleged illegal construction mentioned an illegal driveway built by his neighbor who is head of the Shefa department. I think this is Balayish - balayish was head of shefa, and is also a neighbor of cohens. I dont know why it didnt mention his name or ask him for a response.
Is Balyahsh one of the mayoral candidates who is is running on a campaign of "integrity?"
ReplyDeletearent they all?
Deleteconsidering the rampant illegal construction throughout the city (not just now but historically), it seems like a minor issue (even if it is correct as reported). did you see the article in connections by an engineer who says how bad illegal construction has gotten that the msirad hapnim took the authority away from the engineering department of the iryah last year?
ReplyDeleteThe issue is that Eli Cohen portrays himself as a man full on integrity and honesty and according to these alleged reports - which he hasn't denied - it seems that he himself is guilty of criminal activity. Something to think about before the upcoming elections.
ReplyDelete"criminal activity"?
Deleteyou're joking? aren't you?
If that's the best you can dig up - it just shows that Eli Cohen is gonna be a good mayor.
Rafi
ReplyDeletedo you let the security guard check your bags on the way into a mall?
Do you let them check your receipt when you leave a shop?
Are these not examples of treating the "presumed" innocent like criminals?
entirely different. the police do not normally come and check the id of every person who walks into the ministry of interior. there might be a security guard checking bags. the police were called in special to check a specific group out of suspicion of possible fraud.
