Minhag Kapparos saved by MK Yaakov Asher!

After passing new directives that would have led effectively to a legal ban on the minhag of kapparos this year, erev Yom Kippur, the Ministry of Agriculture is backtracking...

Bechadrei is reporting that MK Yaakov Asher (UTJ) requested they hold another session to debate the issue, as it is possible to perform this holy minhag while adhering to the law and while being careful about not causing unnecessary pain, tzaar baalei chayim..

The veterinary services responded positively and decided to allow kapparos on Erev Yom Kippur, but only under tight conditions - kapparos only through approved slaughterhouses and transporting the chickens to designated areas.

Asher expressed appreciation and his thoughts of what dialogue can accomplish instead of ignoring the needs of the community.. and he also said he is going to continue working to get approval for the entire week between Rosh Hashana and Erev Yom Kippur and not just on Erev YK itself...

  1. Thus we avoid frum editorials decrying how the State of Israel is once again trying to destroy the Torah. Baruch haShem!

  2. And if Charedi politicians would approach every issue like this, that they need to speak to the other side, instead of crying discrimination and insisting that the laws have no validity, we could get a lot further around here.

  3. Can someone please point me to a source for Kapparoth from any Rishon, Gaon, or Talmud please? Thanks.
