Quote of the Day

I too pay taxes that go to things that I cannot benefit from. The value of Torah learning has accompanied the Jewish people for thousands of years. Just like this community knows how to respect the needs of other communities, so too the other communities needs to respect the value of Torah learning

-- former MK of Shas, Yigal Guetta

while he is right on one side of the coin about respecting Torah learning, in what was does "this community respect the needs of others"? in my neighborhood right now there is a fight over the city building a small soccer field in a park. It was already moved once due to complaints by the Haredi community and now they are protesting the new location in a park at the edge of the neighborhood. And this happens all over in so many realms.

  1. Is this a case of more ZilZul shabbat/s
than prior or just unfair NIMBY

  3. I'd like a few examples of places his taxes (not his people's taxes; they don't pay taxes) go that he "can't benefit from."

    1. he is probably thinking of various cultural events most haredim dont benefit from like government budgets that go to the theaters and concerts and whatnot, in addition to an example regularly used of budgets going to universities for far eastern studies and other liberal arts type programs
