Interesting Psak: Cultured Meat

Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Lau has been investigating the manufacture and processing of cultured "meats" and has now issued an official psak about its halachic status.

Rav Lau has paskened that cultured meat is pareve but. "Pareve but" meaning, it is pareve, but....

Stressing that this only applies to the type of cultured meat he investigated and others that use other methods might be different, Rabbi Lau paskened this type of cultured meat is pareve, with some conditions and qualifications largely about the maris ayin aspect of it:
1. as long as there is supervision that the cells were taken from the embryo and all other parts and ingredients used in the process are supervised, this will be kosher and pareve
2. if it will be marketed as meat or as a meaty product, and if it is made to look like meat and taste and smell like meat, there would be room to be strict and consider it kosher but not pareve as far as eating/cooking it with milk
3. it should not be advertised alongside dairy products as doing so might cause people to be lax about milk and meat.

  1. Well kind of like the stringencies in place originally, when parve milk and parve oce cream were not commonplace. Like placing it on the table with the original packaging.

    1. This is different. Until now, parve alternatives were from non-meat/dairy sources (usually plants), and made to look like a meat or milk product. Cultured meat is grown from animal cells. Biologically it's the same (or really close) to "real" meat, but it's lab-grown. Whether or not it's parve is not just a matter of public policy (although public policy is addressed in the psak).

    2. Still not really different, halachicly it's considered non-meat.

  3. Why is it that the Jewish people, especially those who are observant Jews, go along with the rest of the world and particularly now in this insane era where there is no normalcy, no morality, no ethics whatsoever where they are planning to use, c'v, cremated human beings as the new fertilizer (beyond evil) and promoting insects as the protein in the new world of no meats, but only plants with insects in them. The thought of this and what they want to do with the meat and they want also to discard the cows, so there are no more dairy products.
Yet religious so-called leaders jump on the same band wagon as the new meshugaim; this is avodah zorah personified. We pray H' help us all.

    1. How is a Psak on the kashrut of a new food item at all related to your comment?

    2. "cremated human beings as the new fertilizer"
      Don't you mean composted?

      "promoting insects as the protein"
      What's wrong with eating insects?

      "this is avodah zorah personified"
How is it עבודה זרה? How is it "personified"?

    3. Yeah, I was going to say: Cremated humans don't leave nearly enough remains to serve as fertilizer.
