Picture of the Day

looks like the apocalypse out there... this is people abandoning their cars on Highway 1 and hightailing it in the other direction on foot as the new wildfires continue to spread..

In light of the dry hot weather with strong winds and evaluation of the meteorological services and security forces, tonight's torch lighting ceremony has been cancelled due to potential danger. They will broadcast the recorded dress rehearsal in its place.

Elaitzur can't see

The news hit today with the revelation that "Elaitzur", Yair Elaitzur, the Haredi Breslav Rapper with the recent hit song "Od Yoter Tov" among others (not sure exactly how to describe him so I will leave it at that) is going to be performing at the Yom Haatzmaut torch lighting ceremony on Har Herzl.

The revelation was actually that Elaitzur has decided to perform without his glasses so he wont have to see the female dancers in the performance. He is careful about "shmirat Einayim" - I would add as is common in Breslav as it is but many people not Breslav also are. Some people turned this into a scandal of sorts that he is disrespecting the ceremony or the event and the other performers, and how dare he.

I think it is a good thing. I am happy he found a way he could honor the event with his performance that was requested and still hold to his ideals. We get upset when people walk out of such events with female performers, we can't also get upset when they find a way to stay in and participate. So he wont be wearing glasses - big deal. People can think maybe he is wearing contact lenses or maybe people dont even notice - I wouldn't have as I did not know he needs t wear spectacles to see. Had I seen him singing and jumping around the stage without glasses I would not have even thought about it.

Good for Elaitzur for finding a solution. I saw a report that Rav Arush, his rav, was uncomfortable with him participating at all alongside female dancers and want it cancelled. I guess we'll see on Yom Haatzmaut what happens (I think it is being pre-recorded again like last year but not sure) and what was or will be decided, but good on Elaitzur for finding a way acceptable to him to make it happen. It makes me like him more, not less.

no fires

I just saw in the news that the National Fire and Rescue Authority has announced that due to the extreme weather conditions coming upon us it is prohibited to light bonfires and other fires in public areas from now through May 7. This applies in the entire country. This range of dates obviously includes Yom Haatzmaut.

I dont know if this is CYA or a real concern, but considering the recent wildfires just last week that burned down thousands of dunam of forest and fields, along with forcing the evacuation of the residents of several towns, it is probably better safe than sorry.

My guess is that before Lag BaOmer we'll get similar announcements, as we do pretty much every year.

Kenaina hara

Every year right before Yom Haatzmaut the Ministry of Interior releases the latest stats from the Population Registry about the population of Israel.

This year, as we approach Israel's 77th birthday, the numbers look like this:

Israel has finally crossed the 10 million mark with a official population of 10,094,000 (is it really such a round number?).

That 10+ million is made up of 20.9% Arabs (2,114,000), 2.5% foreign workers (248,000), and 77.6% Jews and non-Arab "others" (7,732,000).

In the past year the Israeli population has increased by 135,000 people. During the past year 174,000 new babies were born in Israel. 5% of Israelis are under the age of 10.

96% of Israelis are satisfied with their lives and with their relationships with family. 92% are in regular contact with friends, and 78% do not feel lonely on a regular basis.

There are 15.8 million Jews in the world today. In 1939 there were 16.6 million, so we are on the cusp of getting back to that level. In 1939 3% of world Jewry was in Israel (Palestine at the time), and today we are at about 49.9% in Israel. In 1948 right before the State was founded there were 11.5 million Jews in the world with 6% in Israel.

but we are not counting.

kenaina hara.

Quote of the Day

Arnon Milchen bathes in champagne, he drinks champagne at every meal, my wife received a minute amount of that. He fills his entire cellar with champagne.... I would like to know how many calories are in 160 crates of champagne just to clarify that it is impossible. Simply there is no such thing. If she would have dank all those calories she would look like a sumo wrestler

peace with Syria...

whoa, this is big news if true...

the current formation of Syria is interested in making peace with Israel and joining the Abraham Accords....

there will need to be negotiations of course, and they, and surely Israel, will have their demands, but just being open to the idea and possibility is big news... and the conditions mentioned in the article don't see to be too difficult for this to be possible...

I wonder if Turkiyy/Turkey will get upset about this and try to prevent it...

Ben Gvir's trip

Even though I'm not a fan of Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, I'm somewhat embarrassed and ashamed on his behalf.

Ben Gvir made a big deal of going to the USA on state business for the first time and he has no official government meetings to attend. It seems his one big event was a fundraiser of some sort at Mar-a-lago. Besides for that he did a photo shoot at a gun shop and walks around New York looking for people to speak to (Chabad was willing) and to respond to protestors. Shuls are debating whether or not to host him, with at least one even inviting him and then canceling..Watching the reports of his travels, he looks like nothing more than a petty Kahane activist wandering aimlessly through NY riling up anti-Israel anti-Jewish protestors.

Surely he will declare it a successful trip. He even got to flash a V symbol of victory to protesters. I feel bad for him.

Ronen Bar's declaration

Ronen Bar, still head of the Shabak for now, submitted his declaration to the Supreme Court to explain why he should not be fired at this time (though supposedly he said he will resign soon anyway). and has created quite a stir.

In Bar's declaration he revealed some titillating information about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some of his requests of the Shabak over the years including to collect information about leftist protestors, and to stand by the government in any situation of a constitutional crisis, and more. And this is just the portion that was made public. There is another portion of the declaration that is top secret and "for your eyes only" so we dont know what is included in that portion.

Obviously the Prime Minister's people, if not he himself, will declare it all lies and an attempt to bring down the right wing government.

And maybe it is.

We don't know. it is his word against his word, and we the simple people have no way to know who is telling the truth. Unless Bar has documentation and recordings, it is all hearsay.

All that being said, besides for possibly the "Qatargate" investigation that might be considered a conflict of interest, I personally do not see why any of this (not including the top secret portion of which we do not know the content), exciting and titillating as it might be, would be a reason to prevent his firing. Even if it were all true and this shows PM Netanyahu to be dangerous to democracy and to the State of Israel (which he is anyway, considering all the major tragedies that happened under his leadership), seemingly the government has the right to fire the head of the Shabak, unprecedented as it may be.

I still think it was a mistake for the Left to take on Ronen Bar as a sacred cow and protect him and protest on his behalf. He played a massive role in the failures of October 7, and he should not be protected. At most they should have used him as an example to demand more "responsibility" and resignations, not protect him to keep in his position as head of Shabak.

Shapiro to light a torch

Ben Shapiro was invited by Minister Miri Regev, organizer/planner of the official ceremony, to light one of the torches in the Yom Haatzmaut ceremony coming up in a couple of weeks.

There is a lot of buzz online about this invitation, saying Shapiro is not worthy. People point to some of his harsh statements against gays and lesbians, and to his positions on transgender issues, and I think also to his anti-abortion stance and say he is divisive and should not be honored at the torch-lighting ceremony.

Nobody is the perfect candidate. Every person will have something wrong with him or her..be it a public position or stance they promote or a character flaw or whatever it may be. Ben Shapiro has been a strong supporter of Israel and has been a vocal supporter of Israel, especially throughout the war. Shapiro has used his massive platform to support Israel and has traveled around the world supporting Israel. Shapiro also has had the ear of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, at least at times recently if not always.

Shapiro is a great candidate for lighting the Torch of Diaspora Jewry, even if some of his personal position on other issues not related to Israel might be somewhat divisive or perhaps a better description is "disliked" by some.

Pita Protest

the following display of pitas that says "one pita per day" was created as a protest outside the home of Idit Silman, who collapsed the previous government, ostensibly, over the fact that the Supreme Court instructed the government to enforce the law that security guards should not check people entering hospitals for chametz

I think the protest, in concept, is cute but I cringe at the way the bread is being treated, even on Pesach, disgracefully on the ground.

Also, the protest style really has little to do with the hostages, which they are using as a justification, and more with the fact that Silman brought down the previous government and joined with the next government that presided over the greatest tragedy and massacre in the history of the State of Israel and she did not find that a reason to leave the government.

Interesting Psak: no chametz in toilets

Hamechadesh (and other Haredi media news outlets as well) is reporting an interesting psak issued by "the rabbis of Bet Shemesh".

Normally people eat chametz until the time on Erev Pesach that one is obligated to stop eating chametz and then people dispose of it and burn the chametz...this year because Erev Pesach is on Shabbos, and one cannot eat matza on Erev Pesach, and we need a way to dispose of our remaining chametz after eating the challa (in whatever form you might have it) but unable to burn it because of Shabbos, it is common for one of those methods being flushing the remaining chametz down the toilet.

The rabbanim of Bet Shemesh, whoever they are - I havent seen a list of the 30 names signed on the letter - issued a psak that people should not dispose of their remaining chametz by flushing it down the toilet on Shabbos, whether it is just the chametz itself or even if the chametz is wrapped in a vessel of some sort such as a bag. In previous years when the situation was similar with Shabbos being Erev Pesach, people flushed things down the toilet and it caused problems with the pipes getting stuffed up and even caused chametz to come back up, and sometimes also into neighbors houses, on Pesach itself. This is therefore a mitzva of disposing the chametz being done by causing damage and even causing people to have chametz present, and it is a mitzva being done via an aveira.

It sounds horrible and disgusting. I dont know why any homeowner would flush bags of chametz down the toilet or drain. I can understand crumbling up bread into small pieces, that seems ok, but big pieces and doing it with bags or other containers seems worse than negligent and a recipe for disaster. Do they really not think it might cause a blockage of the pipes and have a sewage backup over the holiday?

Besides for the damage being caused to everyone in the area, I am not sure there is really a chametz issue. once the food has been sitting in the sewage system it doesnt seem like it retains its status as edible food. And anyway, if I am the neighbor and have someone else's chametz coming up through my pipes, it still doesnt belong to me so I havent violated the prohibition of having chametz on pesach. EVen the fellow who flushed it down was mafkir it and did the annulment of chametz so it is stupid to do this, it is damaging to do this, but I dont think it is a violation of the rules of chametz nor is it causing others to sin.

The rabbonim signed on the letter suggested an alternate solution. They suggested throwing any remaining chametz into the street, into the public thoroughfare. The Municipality has no intention to acquire that chametz and will make all the garbage cans hefker before Shabbos, so chametz can be disposed of in city garbage cans.

It is not uncommon here for people to refuse to dispose of old bread in the garbage cans, even wrapped up, and instead just put the leftover bread (all year round) on top of walls near the garbage cans or on top of the garbage cans. I wonder how they will do this before Pesach rather than putting it in the hefker bins...

If the city if making all the garbage bins hefker, I wonder what they would do if somebody would take ownership of some of these bins and take them home...

the foreign side of QatarGate

The Qatargate scandal and investigation is a confounding one. It always is when you dont know much of the details of who is suspected of what and much of the story is kept under wraps.

This past week as Qatargate stepped up a level found people debating whether Qatar is an enemy of Israel or not. People who used to say Qatar is an enemy State are now saying Qatar is complex or Qatar is complicated but not an enemy. People who previously did business with Qatar are now saying Qatar is a hostile entity or an enemy of Israel.

To me the question of whether Qatar is an enemy of Israel or not is besides the point. Pointing out the fact that Qatar is one of the main financiers, if not THE main financier, of Hamas, is beside the point.

I dont think anyone other than the State of Israel should be funding salaries in the Prime Ministers Office, or any other government office or Ministry. Not even Israel's greatest friends and allies in the world. If I heard the USA was paying the salaries of the aides of Israel's Prime Minister, I would think that is a problem. If I heard Hungary was paying the salaries of aides of the Defense Minister of Transportation Minister, to me that would be a serious problem.

In my mind it does not matter, for this issue, if Qatar is an enemy or not - no foreign entity should be paying the salaries of people in the government (Knesset included) of Israel. If Qatar is an enemy state that makes it worse, but if they are not an enemy it is still not ok.

The government has been pretty busy at times over the past year getting upset (even to the point of passing laws about this) that foreign money is funding leftist protest movements in Israel and anti-government activity, when it turns out that foreign money was also funding people in the government itself.
