We need each child in Israel to study maths and English. It is not in the place of Torah learning, it is not a battle against the Haredim...  to distinguish this from the "sharing the burden" issue, there is broad consensus among the Haredi community that there is really no reason that children in Israel should not learn maths and English - the Vilna Gaon was a genius in the maths, the Rambam was a doctor, and King Solomon knew 70 languages.

1. it looks like Lapid is still willing to go head to head with the Haredi community and is not planning on changing his tactics.

2. It seems implied from his words that while core curriculum studies is necessary and has broad consensus so he will push it again, "sharing the burden" with army service for Haredim is something he might not push again the way he did before.
