As of this morning, thousands of Yeshiva Bochurim are AWOL
According to the various articles I have read, last night the time allotment for formulating a new draft law to grant deferments to yeshiva bochurim has expired. With no new law in place, tens of thousands of yeshiva bochurim now technically have the status of being AWOL. The military police have not shown up in the yeshivas yet to arrest anyone and nobody has been pulled from the yeshivas into the army and forcibly drafted, but the future of this remains open, while the government continues to work over a new law, and the Supreme Court considers the governments request for a 4 month extension.
Hopefully something will be worked out, and quickly. I blame the Haredi parties because they always wait until the last minute, and then they pull their shtick of not supporting the bill they push, and add to that some internal fighting, and that leaves the status of [tens of] thousands of young men open and unclear.
For now the military police and draft boards have not made any moves, but if this situation continues for any length of time, I am sure they will be forced to. They cannot leave a situation like this untouched, and even if they don't want to touch it with a ten foot pole and "make trouble", there will be a lot of pressure from a lot of politicians and others to enforce the law. Whatever the final law will look like, the relevant parties and personalities need to sit down and get it finalized pronto.
The worst thing n any situation is lack of clarity. Right now, even the Vaad Hayeshivot, the organization meant to liaise between the army and the yeshiva system, does not know how to instruct the yeshiva boys and what to tell them as far as registering and requesting deferments.
For the good of everybody, they need to focus on this and stop all the infighting on the other issues, and get this taken care of...

The opposition should force the Charedi parties to vote for whatever law is formulated. No Charedi vote, no opposition vote. The Charedim need a new law more than the other parties want to give them one.
