Netanyahu should go home anyway
The police have recommended PM Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted for bribery in "Case 4000". By law Netanyahu does not need to resign. Definitely at least not until there is an actual indictment, which remains to be seen...
That being said, this case does not change my opinion, whether Bibi is indicted or not. As good a Prime Minister as he might have been (and everybody can decide that for himself or herself), I think Israel needs term limits and that Netanyahu should not be eligible to run again anyway.
So, if he is indicted, morally he should step down. If he is not indicted, he should not be able to run again anyway.
Even if he were the greatest Prime Minister ever, no term limits is bad and makes him feel like he owns the position and become somewhat dictatorial and corrupt. Some say there is nobody who can replace him - there is always someone who can replace the person everyone thinks is irreplaceable. Nobody is irreplaceable. There was an Israel, with Prime Ministers, before Netanyahu, and there will be after Netanyahu as well.

DeleteOf course he knows what term limits means. He just doesn't believe making a law to define it is necessary because that is built into the system. If you don't like the guy don't reelect him.
ReplyDeleteApparently, you don't know what it means either. The rationale behind term limits has nothing to do with liking the guy or not. It is based on two factors: The advantage in name recognition that incumbents have make it inherently difficult to unseat them, and it is healthy to periodically replace the people who run the government. New people, new ideas.
DeleteIn theory you are correct. In reality, since 1992, every Prime Minister NOT named Netanyahu has been a disaster. Rabin/Peres got us Oslo with busses exploding. Barak brought us the second intifada and the fleeing from Lebanon for which we are still paying the price today. Sharon got us the Gush Katif expulsion, which turned life in the south into unbearable (just last month!!!) Olmert had the 2nd Lebanon war disaster.
ReplyDeleteBB's biggest flaw is he did not raise a successor - that's a bug NOT a feature, but it doesn't change what I said above.
