The priority of vaccine distribution in Israel are, for now, that only the elderly, high risk, and healthcare workers can get the COVID-19 vaccine. After that they will drop the age down a bit and likely add teachers as well - I am not sure if there has yet been a final decision for the second stage qualifications.

Yet, many younger people have been easily been able to get the vaccine. It seems that when the clinics take out trays of vaccine bottles from the deep freeze and defrost them for use, they cannot put any extras back and they all have to be used up within a certain amount of time.

Instead of repackaging the bottles into smaller trays, they take out the trays and a lot would go to waste if they only vaccinated the people with appointments, as at the end of the day or every few days, they would have to throw a bunch out.

So the health clinics doing the vaccinations take walk ins - saying yes to people who just walk in and ask if they can get vaccinated, even though they are not in the qualification list. Some clinics even put out notices every now and again saying come until this or that time and you can get vaccinated.

Waste of vaccine has been minimal, and Israel plowed through a million vaccines in about two weeks.

At the same time, there has been criticism from the government and from many in the public, and from heads of the health clinics, that younger and healthy people have been getting it despite the elderly and sick not all having been vaccinated yet, and that they are getting it before teachers and whoever else might deserve higher priority. If you call the health clinic and ask, you might be told the policy is not to give. I have even heard of them denying that they give to walk ins, despite knowing many people who got it that way. But if you walk in the chances are high you will get the vaccine.

Israel is saying no you cant get it yet, but then using the statistics proudly showing a successful vaccination campaign, when a significant percentage is of people who should not yet have gotten the vaccine.

I find that ironic and so Israeli.
