Rabbi, what should I name my son?

Kikar has a report about someone from Boro Park, a Bobover Chassid, who named his newly born daughter a combination of 9 names.

Her name is Leah Hinda Tzirel Malka Etya Sheina Chana Chava Toiba (and her last name Folger).

This reminds me of the joke about a guy who had a baby and went to the rabbi to ask what name to give the baby. The Rabbi said, I dont know, Yaakov, Shimon, Refael, Yitzchak, Chaim, Dovid... Sure enough, at the bris the fellow named his son Yaakov Shimon Refael Yitzchak Chaim Dovid...

I do feel bad for the rabbis and lawyers and bureaucrats and anyone else that will need to fill out forms in her future - every time she is going to fill out some sort of official document she is going to have sit there writing out all these names, sometimes multiple times on the forms or in triplicate or whatever. And then there might not even be enough space on many of these forms for her full name!

  1. My friend Dan reminded me of this when I share your post:
There was an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show where little Richie is horrified to discover that his middle name is Rosebud. HIs parents explained that it was an acronym for the names suggested by the in-laws: Robert, Oscar, Sam, Edward, Benjamin, Ulysses, and David.

  2. Again, for those of you old enough to remember the show.

  3. BTW, the father gave in and shortened the name to just 3 names long instead of the original 9. Maybe he just wanted another aliya. https://www.kikar.co.il/288488.html

I did see somewhere, though I dont know if true it doesnt sound like a possibility, that he gave the 9 names because the parents were driving him crazy telling him what to name the baby. so he picked all the available names from dead grandmothers and gave them all to the baby, and then each person would be able to call the baby by whatever name that person preferred.

  4. Lucky it's a girl - people with multiple names (even 3, let alone 9) are very unpopular with shul Gabbaim - and you don't want to get on the wrong side of the shul Gabai.

If she ever goes over to the dark side and starts davening in an egalitarian minyan, she may have to shorten her name to "shilishi" or something.

  5. A couple I am friends with gave their child 4 names. The father was at a pro-Israel rally the night before the bris and was so inspired added Yisrael to the 3 names already chosen. The mother's father is a mohel.

I saw the mohel at a bris a short time later. I told him that if they gave him more than 3 names he should stop.

This also reminds me of the show 'Dinosaurs' growing up. They decided the baby needing an actual name. They took the baby to the elder in order to receive his name. As the ceremony begins the elder begins to keel over and die. The result is the baby is named 'Aaah Aagh I'm Dying You Idiot' The family then has to find a way have the name annulled.
