he might or might not do it, but he can at least talk about it

Netanyahu has recently been announcing plans for bringing down the cost of living - basically increasing subsidies to make things cheaper for people, though of course that means we will pay more in the long run, whether that is good or bad is another issue.

A lot of people criticize him for these plans (such as adding free education for children ages 0-3, and the latest being cancellation of the Standards Authority or change the funding rules for the private an dsemi-private Haredi school systems). They say he is clearly not telling the truth as he has been Prime Minister for 12 years consecutively and never did any of that - if he could have, why didnt he, and if he couldnt have why is he saying that now he can?.

I dont think it is generally a fair criticism. Different political constellations allow for different opportunities. Additionally, new ideas come forth at different times. Maybe he was not able to shut down the Standards Authority previously or maybe he never thought of the idea previously.

You might believe he is going to do it now if given the opportunity or you might think it is just another election promise that will not actually happen, but there is nothing wrong with his presenting new ideas just because he did not do it previously.

Quote of the Day

It is now Erev Rosh Hashana, I propose to you one thing I learned form my father - he would customarily say, I am not a religious person but I am God-fearing.

looks like the manufactured crisis is over

It seems, as most people expected, that Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael have come to an agreement to continue to run together as a united party (aka joint list) in the coming elections.

The surprising part of the agreement is that it came with so much time to spare. They could easily have dragged this out a couple more days.

That being said, I dont understand what about this agreement is attractive that Belz agreed to it. According to the part that under ideological dispute, they have agreed that if the Right Bloc achieves 61 mandates to form a government, Netanyahu would work to provide equal funding to the Haredi schools even without incorporating the core curriculum studies. And if the Right bloc does not achieve 61, then Degel would allow one school from Belz to join Chinuch Atzmai, but only a school that has already been learning core curriculum studies, not one that will start and not any more than one.

Obviously if they get 61 that will provide a great solution for them (if Netanyahu goes through with his side in this) but if not, Belz is getting almost nothing. One school? How does that solve anything for Belz? I dont get it, but they agreed to it, so good luck to them.

Prosthetic Toes vs prosthetic hair

this ad has been going around. I have a hard time believing it is not just a joke but is real, but some people online are claiming that they called the number and it is real. I personally did not call.

Interestingly, this kind of reminds me of the shaitel. We just got used to the shaitel. But if you think toes need to be covered, like hair does, wouldnt covering your toes with fake toes be pretty much the same thing as covering your hair with fake hair? It seems like craziness, but I am not sure why people are outraged or scoffing at this when shaitels are a perfectly normal thing.

Iran deal off, for now

According to Prime Minister Yair Lapid the impending deal with Iran is now either delayed or completely off the table, with no negotiations happening at this time, nor are they expected to be renewed any time soon.

Hopefully Lapid is correct and they aren't pulling some fast one behind his back, and hopefully they wont all go back to the table next week.

That being said, with the deal off, at least for now, this is a major success for Lapid and his team. Netanyahu had us believing only he and his antics and loud aggressive behavior could thwart the Iranian deal. He also pointed to the calm and quiet coming from Lapid's office to show that Lapid is not taking the deal seriously, he is not working hard enough to thwart it, etc. Now we see other people are just as capable as he, and they can do it in a quieter fashion without making it all about himself.

This could be a big blow to Netanyahu in the upcoming elections if people take a moment and realize this.

Picture of the Day

PM Yair Lapid brought along several Holocaust survivors on his trip to Germany. As Lapid said, "This evening, I arrived in Berlin for a diplomatic visit accompanied by Holocaust survivors Pnina, Avraham, Shoshana, Yisrael, and Zvi. As we stepped off the plane together and onto German soil, we were welcomed by a German military honor guard. This is their victory, mine as the son of a Holocaust survivor and ours as a people and a nation. We will never forget.”
