iPhone Owner Loses Aliya
Owning an iPhone has been a source of conflict in the haredi community. It has even previously come to the point of such a person being disqualified as a witness for a wedding. Now, with the latest incident, one cannot even get an aliya in shul if he owns an iPhone.
Bechadrei is reporting that on Simchas Torah in Rav Wosners yeshiva in Bnei Braq, Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, someone purchased the aliya of "Kol HaNe'arim" for, reportedly, $10,000. Someone else stepped forward and told Rav Chaim Wosner (the son of) that the buyer was the owner of an iPhone. Rav Chaim Wosner immediately cancelled the sale and ordered it to be auctioned off again.
I am still surprised that people who are such devoted followers of those rabbonim, the guy must have been a pretty devoted follower to be willing to pay $10k for the aliya in Rav Wosner's yeshiva, who hold such positions still are willing to not actually listen to them.
And, I wonder if they also refuse to accept donations from people with iPhones...

And how does the old-fashioned concept of lashon hara factor into this?
ReplyDeleteMiriam, in this case, loshon hara for benefit but I would think that the Torah sin of embarrassing someone in public would have overridden this new gzera in the Haredi world. Apparently not, I hope there will be a clarification and that no Kamtza bar Kamtza will come out of this.

Who's business is it what brand of cell phone a person uses?
