Shrapnel in Bnei Braq is ok because it was from Iron Dome, not Hamas
more on the shrapnel from the rocket that landed in Bnei Braq...
it seems pretty clear that a stray piece of shrapnel was not the intention of the Chazon Ish when he supposedly promised no missiles would land in Bnei Braq. It is probably also not the intention of Rav Kanievsky when he repeats, and extends, that promise.
However, it is interesting to see the calisthenics people go through to try to explain situations so that a gadols promise can remain intact, even though it already seems kind of obvious he didnt mean a stray piece of shrapnel..
Kikar reports that it was really more than a stray piece of shrapnel. A bunch of pieces of shrapnel fell onto someone's house, causing some damage to the roof. It also turns out that the shrapnel was actually pieces of the Iron Dome missile, and not of the missile shot by Hamas. The mayor of Bnei Braq, Chanoch Zeibert, explained it as no contradiction to the promise because no missile shot from outside the country (emphasis mine) has landed in Bnei Braq.
So now the Chazon Ish's promise has been qualified. It was easy enough to say shrapnel doesnt count. That's not called a missile hitting or landing on a target. The missile was destroyed. I guess that isnt good enough, and now the Chazon Ish's promise only refers to missiles shot form outside the country. I guess if a terrorist is in Israel's borders and shoots a missile it could land in Bnei Braq. So I guess Bnei Braq people do need to run for bomb shelters like everyone else, because the Chazon Ish's promise won't necessarily protect them. Maybe he isnt worried about local missiles because it hasnt happened yet, but it isnt a problem until it becomes a problem (God forbid). Then we'll have to find a new explanation.

not only is the promise kept, but more importantly the iron dome shrapnel should be seen as anti-chareidi attack, no?
ReplyDeleteThis brings "Animal Farm" to mind - each time there was a change to the rules for animals to the benefit of the pigs, there was a change to the rule in such a way that they were still within the rule.
ReplyDelete"All animals are created equal - but some are more equal than others".
