Amazon Free Shipping to return

One of the victims of Corona was the Amazon free shipping to Israel deal on orders over $49. Shipping from Amazon can be expensive, and it was expensive, and that is before even taking into account that if your order is above the limit of $75 you will start to pay VAT as well. When Amazon introduced the free shipping deal there was an explosion of sales to Israel.

When Corona hit, Amazon canceled the deal, initially because they limited their entire shopping experience to essential items and then it just stuck because shipping globally was so limited for so long. While consumers have been hoping and wishing Amazon would bring back the free shipping to Israel deal, they so far have not, leaving many disappointed Israelis and especially expats who no longer have had access to their favorite products at reasonable prices.

According to JPost, Amazon is interested in bringing back the free shipping deal and is looking into the possibility.

According to the report they are also considering raising the threshold for the free shipping to orders over $70.

That would make it a very tight window for consumers who want to get the free shipping but keep the order under $75. I am pretty sure that at this range the popularity of this will not reach quite as high as pre-Corona...

We continue to wait and see what happens with this. Hopefully there will be more final news soon...

  1. technically the VAT payment here takes into account the shipping cost (even with free shipping to consumer, the shipping is paid for by Amazon and that value is added to product price), so $70 of product to qualify for free shipping will certainly end up up with over $75 in total value once shipping is added on...

    1. that is correct but if I am not mistaken, if there is free shipping over $70, the $75 will be pure product with no shipping charge

    2. no, there will be a regular shipping charge listed and printed on the package, it's just paid by Amazon, but the tax people here are supposed to consider it part of the value imported and to be added to the purchase price to determine being under $75 even though it's not paid by the consumer. This is the way it was during the 2019-2020 promotion.

(although, to be honest, the tax authority here was apparently pretty lax about following their own rules and it was possible to get a package with a total value somewhat above the $75 limit without paying any tax, that wasn't the official rule so be aware that they might play by the rules this time...)
