Eichler's absurdity

Deputy Minister Yisrael Eichler has been part of a weird situation for the last several months....

Because of a dispute between Degel Hatorah and Agudat Israel, the two factions (not including the sub-factions) making up the political party Yahadut Hatorah regarding a rotation agreement that was supposed to be implemented moving Yitzchak Pindrus back into the Knesset for Degel, the beis din ajudicating the case came up with a solution ro resolve the issue. The solution was to have Yisrael Eichler be appointed as a Deputy Minister which would allow him to resign from the Knesset and open a spot for Yitzchak Pindrus under the "Norwegian Law".

Eichler became Deputy Minister in the government Ministry of Communications despite Yahadut Hatorah, United Torah Judaism, his party, having had left the coalition back in July 2025. This was an absurd situation in which UTJ was not part of the coalition due to their protesting the government's handling (or actually, not handling) of the draft law they wanted/needed but one of their members took and held a government position as Deputy Minister.

It now gets even more absurd.

Deputy Minister Eichler gives an interview to Mishpacha Magazine for this week's edition of the publication. The purpose of the interview is to talk politics and Eichler's work and the Day Care Law he is trying to get passed, among other things.

During the interview Eichler makes an interesting and absurd statement. He says, "I am not a partner in this government and I have not participated in any government meetings. [Being a Deputy Minister] is purely a technical matter."

I remember back in 2015 Yaakov Litzman took the position of Minister. That was the first time a UTJ representative took a ministerial position. Until 2015 the approach of UTJ was to not take ministerial positions in government saying this basically absolves them of any government decisions that might be against halacha such as chilul shabbos and the like. Since Litzman broke the ice, UTJ reps have regularly taken more and increasingly more ministerial positions.

So they used to avoid being a partner in the government by refusing to take ministerial positions, and now they take ministerial positions but still deny membership and responsiblity for government decisions. Absurd.

Further, taking a position as Deputy Minister is an expensive matter and it comes with great responsibility. There is important work to do both in the ministry and in the government. It comes with offices, advisors, car and driver, pension and all sorts of discretionary funds and budgets. Yet Eichler takes all that and is obviously, by his own admission, not doing his job. he does not participate in government meetings. It is just a technical appointment to satisfy the dispute between Degel and Agudah and get Pindrus back into Knesset.

Cynically, it is all just a matter of jobs to them to help themselves to a parnassa and not actually do anything they are supposed to be doing as a matter of representing their voters and the people of Israel (in ministerial positions especially, more so than just as Knesset members, they are supposed to be representing all of Israel not just their voters).

Absurd. Eichler is a Deputy Minister when his party is not a member of the government coalition and then claims even as Deputy Minister he is not part of the government that is doing things he does not agree with. It makes sense and fits very nicely with a government that does not take repsonsiblity for anything and blames everything on everyone else.

Police literally rip the pants off a protester and then drag him away...

this morning's anti-haredi-draft protests got very violent very quickly with police having no patience for it and using stun grenades and their heavy batons to beat protestors bloody...

as I have said before, the Israel Police have always been too violent... if anyone deserves to be at the other end of that violent baton it is people, any people, who shut down the country by blocking roads (the blocking of roads is violence against innocent bystanders), especially during rush hour traffic but any other time as well, but I am not sure anyone really deserves to be at the end of that violent baton... (note: I am using "violent baton" as a noun - the baton is not violent, but the policeman wielding it is)

why arrest them?

On Friday afternoon a news blurb went out about a Chassidishe avreich coming in via the airport with his young daughter having been arrested/detained and handed over to the Military Police for being a deserter. The Eida Hachareidis put out an announcement with a threat that if he is not released immediately the airport would be completely shut down in the coming days.

Shortly after that notice, another notice hit the news that the avreich was released.

This was after another arrest attempt Friday morning that was thwarted by the Peleg system for dealing with these arrests by sending mobs out.

I don't get it. If they are just going to let these guys go anyway once the Peleg or Eida make their threats or send out their crowds, why are they arresting these people at all? They look extremely weak in light of how frequently they are backing down to threats. if they are just going to release them anyway, don't even bother arresting them.

Quote of the Day

We have to put out a clear statement and tell everyone - we have to dismantle this concept called the "Gush Emuni" (the faith bloc). I, as a Likudnik, do not want my vote going to Shas and I do not want to bring Goldknopf into the Knesset and government. Ergo, I am calling upon the Prime Minister to dismantle this bloc now, not to succumb to their threats. We need to be the ones who dismantle it.

  -- MK Dan ilouz (Likud)

not sure how he expects the Likud to be able to form a coalition if he thinks the Likud should work against some of its national partners. Whatever you might think about those partners, the Likud needs them at this point... Netanyahu created this fiction of blocs back when we were in a series of re-elections and it has worked well for him, and he should be the one to dismantle it rather than be dragged around by others, but right now he cannot as he has no other options... maybe that is something he should deal with, but util he does, his bloc is his only option...

doing away with primaries

Amit Segal of Channel 12 is reporting that PM Netanyahu, in his role as head the Likud party, is working to cancel the upcoming Likud primaries and have the candidates for Knesset in the upcoming elections selected by a committee.

The issue has been ongoing for a little while, with Netanyahu both demanding a large number of designated slots into which he can personally choose someone for that slot, and also Netanyahu seemingly thinking that certain MKs who would benefit from the primaries and get into realistic slots might harm the Likud list in the upcoming national elections and cost the Likud some seats. That concern is based on advanced polling Netanyahu relies on.

In the end I think this is just posturing and Netanyahu won't go ahead with this. He will use this for some sort of compromise, perhaps to get more "shiryunim", reserved slots, than what others are willing to give but fewer than what he is demanding, or maybe something else. I just cannot see him canceling the primaries.

The Likud, and Netanyahu, has always been very proud of the primaries and uses them to attack many of the other parties. the Likud is one of just a few parties that hold real primaries to choose its candidates, and they regularly claim they are the only democratic party that holds primaruies while other parties have their candidates selected by the chairman or a committee. I have a hard time believing they are really going to give that up and make the Likud just like most of the other parties in that regard. I can see the attacks on the Likud for this if it happens, King Bibi canceling primaries and selecting the candidates that work for him. I don't think he will give anyone that opportunity.

And perhaps a bigger reason is that if there are no primaries, why should anyone be a member of the Likud? If they were to cancel the primaries I would assume there would be mass cancelations of membership, which would be a big financial hit to the Likud.

We Don't Need No Education

This morning at the Israeli Democracy Institute conference Naftali Bennett took an interesting campaign stance.

Bennett said, "If I will be elected Prime Minister, I will shut down all the Haredi parties' school chains - (Personally (me, not Bennett) I think it is a problem that political parties are running schoool systems, but that's the way it is, now back to Bennett) Under our noses an independent Haredi anti-Zionist state has been established within Israel and we are funding it from our pockets. In the next government we will move to fix an historical error that allowed for the creation of seperate states. This is the rule: not stately (there is no great definition for mamlachti) - not on our dime...."

I dont know if he is serious or not about this. Maybe it is just trying to differentiate himself from others and bring in votes. Even if Bennett was serious about this, I doubt he would be able to do this, even if today's Opposition wins and he figures out a way to get the other parties (Eisenkot and Lieberman specifically) to support him for PM ... 60 or 70 years ago the Haredi school systems were tiny. Today they are massive.

Even if he wins, nobody is forecasting a landslide that would give him a powerful government. Even if you trust the polls that forecast victory for the Opposition and defeat for today's Coalition parties, it will be another weak government (because it will be narrow) that will probably not last long and will not get anything major done. This is something major that will be a big fight and garner massive opposition and won't be so easy to accomplish.

I think this can be taken with a grain of salt

Fascinated by the protests

Last night there were protests and riots in and outside of Bet Shemesh. Peleg Yerushalmi people found out or heard that a yeshiva bochur in the area had been arrested, or maybe detained, for being a "deserter" from the IDF. They quickly mobilized and wreaked havoc in the area, including breaking into the police station where the detainee was supposedly being held, until they were eventually pushed out.

I'm honestly fascinated by the protests that happen when a yeshiva bochur is arrested/detained, and specifically by their level of organization..

They seem to have enough people all over the place to get a crowd quickly at the site of the arrest. They get the word out quickly and people show up immediately.

They don't have weapons but the police usually have no control and can't defend themselves against these protesters with the protesters often creating so much havoc that the police often releases the detainee or just gives up and leaves the area if they have not already gotten their guy. And like last night, they at times even break into the police station and physically free them from the clutches of the police.

No consequences, nobody really gets into any trouble, anyone arrested for this behavior seems to be released fairly quickly.

I'm amazed and fascinated.
