Quote of the Day
the day will come when we'll turn the country upside down, but that's at a later stage. The entire land like a bonfire. Do you think they'll make slaves and servants out of us? The moment will come when everyone will go out to protests across the entire country. We'll take the prisons and turn them into yeshivas
-- MK Ytzchak Goldknopf, in advance of the Haredi car protest

like Kaplan
The Haredi community in Israel will be holding another protest against the draft this afternoon. This protest will be a car protest, meaning convoys of cars will be leaving the various Haredi cities and communities and driving slowly on the roads around Israel causing bad traffic for a while.
I am in favor of their right to protest. They have the same right to protest as everyone else in Israel, even if their subject of protest is one other people do not like or agree with. That should not need to be said.
Their right to protest does not include violence or civil disobedience (even if it is an effective means of protest) just like nobody else has the right to protest like that, and protests are supposed to be coordinated with the police for permits, especially if disrupting the flow of traffic is involved. This too should not need to be said.
Unlike many of the other Haredi protests we have seen recently, from what I understand the protest scheduled for this afternoon has been somewhat coordinated with the police and they have a permit for it (though I think not for shutting down roads, maybe I am wrong). Like the Gur protest the other day near the army prison, which was coordinated with permits, I would expect today's protest to be a bother and nuisance to the general public but relatively peaceful and uneventful.
All that being said, every time I see someone criticizing any of the Haredi protests or any aspect of them, supporters of the protests start screaming "but Kaplan!..." - Kaplan blocked roads, Kaplan got violent, police didnt touch the Kaplan protestors.... whether true or not, whether accurate or not, immediately they run to compare their protests to Kaplan.
I am not sure that is a great strategy. The Kaplan protestors have become among the most (excluding by their supporters obviously) divisive and hated groups around Israel - completely on the Right but also well into the center and into the light Left.
The Haredim are not so well liked right now either out in the general public, but I am not sure they want to be compared to Kaplan and make themselves really hated by so many by demanding to be treated like Kaplan...

Picture of the Day
this morning's anti-haredi-draft protests got very violent very quickly with police having no patience for it and using stun grenades and their heavy batons to beat protestors bloody...
as I have said before, the Israel Police have always been too violent... if anyone deserves to be at the other end of that violent baton it is people, any people, who shut down the country by blocking roads (the blocking of roads is violence against innocent bystanders), especially during rush hour traffic but any other time as well, but I am not sure anyone really deserves to be at the end of that violent baton... (note: I am using "violent baton" as a noun - the baton is not violent, but the policeman wielding it is)

Fascinated by the protests
Last night there were protests and riots in and outside of Bet Shemesh. Peleg Yerushalmi people found out or heard that a yeshiva bochur in the area had been arrested, or maybe detained, for being a "deserter" from the IDF. They quickly mobilized and wreaked havoc in the area, including breaking into the police station where the detainee was supposedly being held, until they were eventually pushed out.
I'm honestly fascinated by the protests that happen when a yeshiva bochur is arrested/detained, and specifically by their level of organization..
They seem to have enough people all over the place to get a crowd quickly at the site of the arrest. They get the word out quickly and people show up immediately.
They don't have weapons but the police usually have no control and can't defend themselves against these protesters with the protesters often creating so much havoc that the police often releases the detainee or just gives up and leaves the area if they have not already gotten their guy. And like last night, they at times even break into the police station and physically free them from the clutches of the police.
No consequences, nobody really gets into any trouble, anyone arrested for this behavior seems to be released fairly quickly.
I'm amazed and fascinated.

The Peleg Hayerushalmi people have declared a protest "Day of Rage" opposite the entrance to Prison 10 at 5pm. But the time has come and gone and the protestors have not yet arrived.
A Peleg leader told me "The protestors are stuck in traffic on the way [to the prison]. The traffic here in this country is not normal, what is this all about!?"
Completely true.
Hilarious.
They are going to protest and shut down roads that will cause horrible traffic and frustrate many and they are frustrated sitting in traffic on the way and complaining about the traffic.

Pita Protest
the following display of pitas that says "one pita per day" was created as a protest outside the home of Idit Silman, who collapsed the previous government, ostensibly, over the fact that the Supreme Court instructed the government to enforce the law that security guards should not check people entering hospitals for chametz
I think the protest, in concept, is cute but I cringe at the way the bread is being treated, even on Pesach, disgracefully on the ground.
Also, the protest style really has little to do with the hostages, which they are using as a justification, and more with the fact that Silman brought down the previous government and joined with the next government that presided over the greatest tragedy and massacre in the history of the State of Israel and she did not find that a reason to leave the government.

this is insane. The picture was taken at the anti-judicial reform protests in Herzliya today after the government yesterday passed the first reading of the reasonability clause law. I mean, they didn't even put a hat on the kid's poor head!

At the protest in the Ben Gurion Airport, protestors brought an enlarged copy of the Declaration of Independence and then got upset that the police office is stepping on it while trying to do his work to clear the airport of protestors.... on the other hand the policeman is stepping on the Declaration of Independence. I blame these protestors for creating this ridiculous situation and not having boundaries.

protesting what?
Later today is supposed to be the right wing "million person protest"
first, they set their sights high. Not sure why they are looking for a million people. I dont see how they can possibly expect just about 10 percent of the country to show up for this, even if it were the most important thing in the world. It is doomed to failure just because of that. They should have called for 50 or 100k or even shoot big and call for a quarter of a million, but not a million.
Second, what is the protest about? in support of the judicial reform, supposedly. Why does it need support? Netanyahu froze the judicial reform. So it is a protest against Netanyahu?
I dont get the point of or need for this protest... of course everyone has a right to protest, but what are they protesting about?

protection protests come to RBS
After the success of the repeated protests in Jerusalem against two cellular shops accused of selling not kosher phones because the stores were uncertified by the relevant committee, the people involved have gotten emboldened.
The other day there was a protest outside a store in RBS A that sells phones demanding that they get certification and stop selling non-kosher phones. I have no idea if they sell such phones or not (the stores in Geula and Mea Shearim area claimed they did not sell such phones but were simply not certified by the committee). The relevant store being targeted now in RBS is next to Yesh, called Ohr HaCelolar, in the RBS A shopping center. You an see a short clip of the protest at the link above.
Some pashkevilim were thrown around as well:
The pashkevil claims that not only does the store sell the impure devices and causing people to stumble every single day but in recent weeks people have started coming to this store from other neighborhoods as well as it has become the store where anyone who wants to give in to his yetzer to buy a tamei phone goes.
It says even some people from the "yishuv hayashan", the old settlements, meaning Yerushalmim, have fallen prey and lost the purity of their souls.
The pashkevil warns people not to enter or support the store, it is prohibited, it pleads with the store owner to get certified and only sell kosher devices, and wanrs them that if they do not they will start a campaign of massive protests.

blocking roads on way to Meron
I am not sure if this is quite like "cutting off your nose to spite your face", but it can't be too far off.
A yeshiva bochur was arrested yesterday by Kever Rashbi (people go camp out there early before Lag B'Omer in order to make sure they get in, to get a good spot, etc) - he was arrested for never having appeared before the IDF draft board to get his army deferral/exemption. Essentially he was AWOL.
The Peleg people are now threatening to hold hafganot and block roads tomorrow afternoon/evening on roads leading to Meron.
Tomorrow night is Lag B'Omer and tends of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of people will be travelling to Meron from all around the country to celebrate by Kever Rashbi. Hafganot on the roads leading to Meron will be devastating.
Additionally, they say that Rav Shimon Bar Yochai who was persecuted by the government for learning Torah will be there for anyone being moser nefesh to learn Torah today in Eretz Yisrael.
That's a funny comparison. Especially in the defense of someone who gave up learning Torah a couple days early to go hang out by Kever Rashbi instead of just going up Thursday night or Friday morning and spending these days learning Torah.
A reporter from Hamechadesh has reported (on the Hamoked News whatsapp broadcast), though it isnt on their site yet, that the Eida Hachareidis is upset by this threat of a protest by the Peleg while people are trying to get to Meron. The Eida has said they have no problem with them protesting on Friday, on the way back from Meron, but in no way will they allow Peleg to protest on Thursday night. Sounds reasonable - protest and create unreasonable traffic jams on Friday when people are trying to get home for Shabbos.

they are protesting the construction of a new "kosher phone" store
the signs say life is only blissful without internet and movies. In smaller text it adds that this includes filtered Internet and protected phones.
I must say, their lives don't look overly blissful. At least not noticeably more blissful than anyone else's. And if their lives are so blissful, why are they out protesting?
the hardhats are a cute touch...

calming Bnei Braq down
Rav Chaim Kanievsky and Rav Gershon Edelstein have called on the Haredi community to avoid participation in any protests and definitely not to join with reckless people who use violence.
They also say not to get close to any place where such protests are happening, and one should control his sense of curiosity - seeing such events is damaging to the soul.
After expressing my hope that community and police leadership try to find ways to lower the flames, I think it is important to note this call by Bnei Braq leadership. it might not help with the troublemakers, but if the crowds are smaller because the curious bystanders are staying away because of this call, the tensions will not get as high either. I hope the police also put forth similar efforts to calm the situation

Kachol Lavan under pressure for protests
The news is reporting that the Knesset is prepping to vote on the issue of limiting protests during the lockdown. it seems Kachol Lavan is in a bind. They wan tot vote in favor of limiting protests, but are under heavy pressure form the protesters and their supporters to oppose any limitations. They are trying to find a way to bow out, generally by an arrangement to not show up and have others on the opposing team also agree to not show up, but are having difficulty working this out.
I would suggest Kachol Lavan ignore them. Those pushing them to vote against any limitations are mostly hard leftists and are not supporters of Kachol Lavan. They also will not vote Kachol Lavan in the future. There is no need for Kachol Lavan to feel pressure by these people. If Kachol Lavan strongly opposes the vote, that is a different story, but that does not seem to be the case. It seems they are only seeking to oppose because of the pressure from the protesters.
If that is the case, ignore them - they aren't people you will ever get votes form anyway. They will be voters for Lapid and for Meretz and maybe some United Arab List protest voters (not that they are the same, but they have strong anti-Bibi voters among them).

Zoom Hafgana
Nowadays almost everything we do [with other people] has been moved to zoom.
We've had halachic discussions about hosting the pesach seder on zoom, hatarat nedarim on zoom, birkat kohanim, minyan, and more, all in addition to school and extracurricular activities and social events and concerts and many others.
Why can't the protests be moved to zoom during this pandemic like everything else? They aren't being paid much attention to out in the streets of Jerusalem, so let them protest on Zoom and not be paid attention to there instead...

holiday meals at Balfour protests unreasonable
I don't generally complain about people breaking the rules of the Ministry of Health, of the lockdowns or other CoronaVirus related issues. Adults can do what they want, taking the risks into consideration and then pay the price if necessary.

That being said, this is ridiculous.
The protesters against Prime Minister Netanyahu at Balfour St set up a large table for a joint holiday meal on Rosh Hashana.
Forget the shared responsibility of perhaps curtailing the protests during a lockdown, perhaps minimizing them, perhaps even canceling them temporarily.... in the name of protest, tens, hundreds, maybe thousands of people, were allowed to have a shared holiday meal consisting of strangers (ie people who do not live in the same household together), sitting close together with no social distancing, no masks and no precautions.
Forget dangerous and not dangerous. Forget law or no law.
How is it that they are allowed to have a shared meal like that, and from the pictures they do not all look like youngsters, while the rest of the Israeli public is told it cannot have relatives over - grandparents, children, grandchildren, brother, cousins, sisters, etc. for the holiday meal? People are told that they have to have the holiday meal alone, under all sorts of threats and attempts to scare them, while protesters are allowed to hold a joint meal?
Allow protests, if you must, in the name of democracy, even if I think it is also a bad idea. They can go to Balfour, scream slogans, wave signs, and protest Bibi and his policies. Sitting down to a joint meal with a long table set up in holiday fare should not have been allowed when it is banned for everyone else.

Both the City and the Eida want to shut down the streets of Jerusalem, for different reasons
The City of Jerusalem announced, on its Facebook page, an initiative to try to give a boost to local restaurants and other businesses in the entertainment industry, by turning the "hot" streets downtown into a boardwalk at night so that restaurants can put tables out in the streets to have more seating. Live music will also be out at different spots. On the Facebook page the list of streets and exact times are listed, and it starts tomorrow and will run through August.
The issue is that restaurants have been allowed to open, but people are hesitant to go to restaurants and eat indoors. The restaurants mostly do not have a large enough area indoors with enough seating to do reasonable business, so even though they were allowed to open, business in this fashion is still extremely difficult. This nighttime arrangement is meant to give them a big boost for their businesses, and with the added entertainment and boardwalk style, should be a big draw for people to go enjoy.
To me it seems like a nice initiative to help businesses get back on their feet and get people out again.
Not everyone agrees. But I guess that is not a surprise. You can't make everyone happy all of the time.
Kikar is reporting that the Eida Hachareidis is calling for this to be shut down or face protests that
will shut the city.
The Eida believes that this initiative is a major breach that will turn the streets of Jerusalem into a boardwalk with entertainment with the most serious of sins along with a major unbearable source of pain for the haredi neighborhoods that are nearby and their houses and neighborhoods will be turned into a den of thieves.
The Eida says they cannot allow this to happen, to desecrate the holy city and to turn Jerusalem into a breached city with no wall, and to ruin the little that is left after all the breaches that have happened previously.
They call on the city to cancel these plans or they will do everything possible to put a kibosh on them and prevent the desecration. A spokesperson for the Eida threatened serious protests that will shut down the city.
The City of Jerusalem responded with wonder wondering what their problem is as the intent is to give a boost to local business and help people with their parnassa after the disaster from Corona.
In recent years they have mostly been ineffective with their protests, and my guess is that this is just lip service and we won't see any significant hafganot over this. I am not sure what serious sins take place by a couple sitting to have dinner while listening to music and seeing a performance. These might be regular sins, as they happen all the time in many places. I do not know what about this turns it into a serious sins. While some individual places might be worse than most , my guess is the serious sins were happening in those places anyway even before this.

bringing the next generation to hafganot
In what could be their smartest move in a long time, Haredi protesters in Jerusalem held their protest with strollers and little children. They were protesting construction of light rail line son Strauss Street, claiming it will be damaging to the character and nature of their neighborhood.
source: INN
I am not sure if bringing the young 'uns to the protest was symbolic in nature, having to do with the character of the neighborhood, or if it was to prevent security forces from reacting with violence and water cannons and the like. Either way, it was definitely a smart move that would make the protest more difficult to break up.
The other possibility, of course, is that perhaps the children reached the age of chinuch and the parents were taking them out to the hafgana for that purpose - to begin their training in the mitzva of protesting the Zionist State's actions.

the great Garbage Rebellion of Mea Shearim
The following pashkevil went up on the walls of the Mea Shearim area... it is protesting the increasing chilul shabbos around the country, especially in Jerusalem, with additional bus lines going into operation and an increasing number of stores opening for business, with municipal money being spent on chilul shabbos activities. It has even reached the point with the city providing its cleaning and garbage collection services on Shabbos itself in a number of areas such as in the Mahane Yehuda area.
Because of all that, the writers are calling for a garbage rebellion. Anybody who holds Shabbos as valuable will take his garbage out and place it in the streets rather than in the garbage bins and leave the garbage in the middle of the lanes. This will be an expression of protest that is measured, mida knegged mida.
Throw the garbage in the middle of the streets? To me it just sounds like every other protest and rally they hold out there in that part of the world...
