Eida partial boycott on Doritos

While there was some talk and a few calls for a boycott against Doritos due to the Doritos ad in support of same sex marriages, there was not actually anything organized and coordinated, or a concerted effort to actually boycott the brand. Maybe some people stopped buying, but there was no official boycoot and no mass protest.

To that end, the Eida Hachareidis has decided to officially boycott Doritos and other products produced by Strauss. The boycott would be temporary, just until after Pesach. This is being done, they say in a published letter, to express their pain and voice a protest. This is to show it is an important issue to us, and so that others will be wary of following suit.

I never really understood why businesses need to make such social statements in the first place. Besides for that, I am perfectly fine with the Eida putting their money where their mouth is. If it really bothers them so much. instead of just talking and complaining, good for them for actually trying to have some influence on the matter.

And on that note, I am wondering why they are only calling on the people to not buy Doritos (or other Strauss products) yet continue to give their hechsher. Perhaps they should withdraw the hechsher so that their name and logo will not be associated with such abomination..

  1. I know it's unlikely, but maybe they are keeping the hechsher because it's there to attest that they are actually kosher (Doritos, not necessarily the Eidah).

    1. not sure what you mean. there are other hechshers. if Eida felt is is abomination worth boycotting, they really should pull their hechsher as well.

  2. I'm guessing that would have huge long term ramifications by pulling the hechsher and for this they are doing a short term boycott to show disapproval.

  3. Years ago, we represented a client who was and still is a very succesful international fashion company. The Chairman Emeritus was called in to serve as a witness on a case.
I remember he told us there are two theories of advertising: the product theory, and the lifestyle theory. The former, which he subscribed to, emphasizes showing the product and how desirable it is. The latter emphasizes lifestyles and how the product fits into the image of such a lifestyle. It sometimes does not even show the product.
Maybe Doritos should stick to showing Doritos, and people eating them.

  4. Given all the stories years ago about hechshers getting yanked because of mixed seating or inappropriate labelling, yeah it's a good question why they're still "kosher"
But the answer as to why Doritos is making social statements is easy. It's called Woke Capitalism where Woke crap trumps business sense. At some point some activist went to some senior manager and said "We want a statement and if you don't make it we'll call you homophobic."
