deal, no deal

There was a curious report last night that the Prime Minister's Office quickly denied...

The report claimed that there are negotiations ongoing that would have Hamas release a small number of hostages as some sort of gesture to Trump and this small deal would be without any demand to end the war. As mentioned, the Prime Minister's Office denied this.

If this were an option I would hope Israel would reject it. No small deal deal just so Hamas can get on Trump's good side. if they want a deal, it has to be significant for Israel.

But it made me wonder what might happen.

If Hamas were to just release the hostages who hold American citizenship, even just release them with no negotiations as a "goodwill gesture" to Trump, would Trump accept that and back down from his threats against Hamas demanding they release the hostages? Trump has warned Hamas, and has repeated the warning to Hamas, that the hostages better be released by the time he takes office, or else... Is Trump's threat only in regards to the hostages with American citizenship or is it on behalf of all the Israeli hostages? If they did something like this, would they get Trump off their back? Would Trump say to Israel I got my people back, the rest is on you? Or would Trump still stand for the Israeli hostages with the same force or conviction as he has expressed until now?

I don't know if this will happen or not and if it were to happen I have no idea what he would do, but the report and denial made me wonder about this.

this whole royal thing though is weird (to an American/Israeli). They live off the citizens taxes and then they go around on walkabouts in different areas, which seems nice, but then take presents from the peasants..

hurting Bennett

The news recently reported that PM Netanyahu is exploring the idea of creating an additional right wing party to be led by Ofer Vinter. The idea of pushing such a party would be to weaken Naftali Bennett who is strong in the polls right now and considered Netanyahu's main challenger. Presumably, Vinter would take seats away from Bennett.

Today, without specifically connecting it to Netanyahu, the news is reporting that the formation of a new party (or alternatively his joining an existing party) is being explored to be led by Jonathan Pollard, who has supposedly expressed interest in a political career. This too, even without connecting it directly to Netanyahu, is being said to be a way of weakening Bennett.

I don't know much about Vinter's opinions and positions, but if the people who support him are any indication of his political positions, I suspect he wont be as much a challenge to Bennett as to the more right edge of Likud and to Smotritch.

Pollard on the other hand has been pretty outspoken in recent years and has been shown to be super extreme right wing. If he were to join an existing political party, I cannot see any party more appropriate than Otzma Yehudit of Itamar Ben Gvir, though that party too might not be right wing enough. And whether he joins Ben Gvir or another, or whether he forms a new party, again, considering his more extreme positions, I dont think he would be hurting Bennett much by running. Bennett's support seems to come from the softer, more liberal, right of the DL community, not the more extreme, more conservative, right. While it is not for me to say if Pollard or Vinter should or should not join politics and if so via which party, I dont think either will hurt Bennett much and both would more likely hurt the Likud and Smotritch. If Netanyahu wants to take away votes and support from Bennett he should find someone more centrist right to form a new party, such as maybe pushing a Gilad Erdan (whom Netanyahu is struggling with already) to leave Likud and form a party or maybe Tzippi Hotovely.

Har Habayit brouhaha again

Minister Itamar Ben Gvir went up to Har Habayit today, causing a brouhaha as it always does when he goes up. He makes sure to not just go up but to publicize his ascension and to mention about how he prayed, how he now allows prayer and bowing... He rules by maximizing the brouhaha.

And to be sure, I am in favor of allowing Jews to go up as much and as often as they want and to allow them freedom of prayer on Har Habayit. Even if you think Jews should not go up for halachic reasons, that should be a personal decision. The State, being a democracy, should allow freedom of worship and of access to the maximum. Not going up for halachic reasons should be for me and you to decide for ourselves, not the State.

I did find the ensuing exchange humorous.

After the brouhaha began, with many criticizing Ben Gvir's actions solely meant to antagonize the Arabs, The Prime Minister's Office released a statement saying that the status quo on Har Habayit has not changed one iota. The status quo being that Jews can go up (within the limited hours set for this) to Har Habayit but they cannot pray on Har Habayit.

Shortly thereafter, Ben Gvir's office released a statement that Ben Gvir prayed on Har Habayit as per his office's policy to allow it.

Did the status quo change or not? Does it matter. Ben Gvir said it has been changed and acts accordingly, while the PMO says it hasnt and his only purpose seems to be to make the world think it hasn't even if in practice it did.

changing the electoral system

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology of Israel Gila Gamliel said today in an interview that the electoral system in Israel is problematic in that it gives exaggerated power to small parties and we must change the electoral system and we should do it now.

Gamliel said to either make regional representatives or to raise the minimum electoral threshold dramatically in a way that would only allow for a small number of large parties. Today, she said, there is one small party with the Foreign Ministry, and another small party with the Finance Ministry.  This is not proportional.

Minister Gamliel is right, in my opinion. She only gave two examples but many important and significant ministries are controlled by small parties. Every time an election is held, the members of the largest party forming the coalition complain that they are left with crumbs while the small parties who are needed to form the coalition take the bulk of the powerful positions, so this isnt unique to this government.

In the past we have had very low thresholds and higher thresholds. Right now it is high, though Gamliel wants to make it higher. The arguments all have some logic to them in both directions, but the system allows for loopholes to get around the attempt to set limitations. When the threshold is low it allows for a lot of small parties and each one is perhaps less powerful but each needs to be paid off more because each might only bring one or two mandates. When the threshold is high, the parties make technical blocks (like UTJ is, like Smotritch and Ben Gvir did) and often split after the elections, the coalition requires fewer parties but once the government is formed those technical blocks often split making more smaller parties again with exaggerated power.

I do agree the small parties should be absorbed into the large parties, and there should be some form of direct representation so politicians are accountable to the electorate, which as of right now they are not. Absorbing the small parties into the large parties does not mean nobody will take care of the issues those small parties were concerned with - it means the large parties, once accountability is included, will also be concerned for those issues which right now they often give low priority to.

Can it be done?

I dont know. I have found that the only thing you can count on politicians for is to make the changes they think will benefit themselves rather than the system, so I am skeptical, but maybe.

There is nothing more important right now than the deposal of the Attorney General...

[and when pushed further as to how that can possibly be more important than dealing with Iran and their nuclear ambitions, the return of the hostages, the military victory etc Eliyahu explained] The way to free the hostages goes through total military victory, and to achieve that we are obligated to ensure a deep repair of the judicial system which begins with the deposal of the Attorney General..

Quote of the Day

Both those rabbis were special individuals. In my faith it says ‘absent from the body is present in the spirit,’ and you know energy could never die, it could only be transformed – and so if that logic is correct, then their energy is still among us and quantum physics states that in order to acknowledge something, see something, you have to acknowledge the existence of it. So I acknowledge the existence of both of their energies and when I go through difficult times, I found that I visit their grave sites and the energy materializes, materializes things that I look for

Quote of the Day

A partial agreement with Hamas will bring the abandonment of tens of hostages in captivity, will leave Hamas controlling the Gaza Strip and will enable it to prepare the next slaughter via the murderers who will be released from prison, ergo we oppose this bad deal and will work with all our energy to prevent it.

  -- Minister Betzalel Smotritch

I too prefer a deal now for all the hostages rather than for only some of them, but if that can't happen, then some is better than none. Smotritch prefers to abandon all of them than some of them which does not make sense. As far as Hamas controlling Gaza - if Israel would work to bring in another controlling force rather than just expecting it to happen on its own, Israel could ensure Hamas lose control of Gaza.

Mordy Weinstein - Prayer for the Hostages [Official Music Video]

In collaboration with the Young Israel of Scarsdale, Mordy is back with a touching music video for "Prayer for the Hostages." Since October 7, many shuls around the world have adopted the tefillah Mi Shebeirach for our hostages. It is a reminder that we are not whole as long as there our hostages sitting in captivity, and it is a piercing prayer to Hashem to set them free. Until now, no melody had been written for this powerful tefillah. This original composition breathes new feeling into the critical words of the Mi Shebeirach, and the music video features poweful imagery, including footage from Young Israel of Scarsdale's various missions to the Holy Land. It is our heartfelt hope that this song never needs to be sung and that we should be reunited with every last one of our hostages speedily.

the threat that isn't Hamas

I am not quite sure what the purpose is but Hamas released a video of Yahye Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh and Al Arouri visiting a secret base in Gaza, overseeing rocket production and whatnot. Some say this is Hamas's way of threatening Israel...

I am not sure it is the great and ominous threat they think it is. Israel has basically destroyed Hamas's rocket capabilities, and all 3 of the leaders in the video, Sinwar, Haniyeh and Al Arouri have been killed by Israel.

you hurry up while we dont

The news is reporting that Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has instructed the IDF Chief of Staff Hertzi Halevi that the IDF investigation into the events of October 7 are expected t be completed by the end of January 2025 (ie, I expect you to have concluded the investigation by then). And, Katz let Halevi know that he will not approve any further new general appointments in the IDF until he gets the investigation materials to review and learn who was involved in what way, which will affect who gets promoted and advanced and who does not.

That is a good thing.

I do find it humorous though that the government is demanding the IDF hurry up and finish its own investigation into the events of October 7 while the government itself has done nothing but delay even starting an investigation because it does not want to either learn the lessons of what happened or bear the responsibility for what happened.

something brewing

Amit Segal has reported on his Telegram group (so I can't link to the report, and he didn't post it on Twitter, though others are quoting it there) the following cryptic statement:

עמית סגל: ״לא נחכה חמישים שנה: מחר כולם יידעו למה בוטל הדיון״ (טלגרם)

Amit Segal: We wont need to wait fifty years [to find out]: tomorrow everyone will know why the session is cancelled.

During today's session of testimony in court in his corruption trial, PM Netanyahu requested at one point that tomorrow's court session in which he is due to appear for more testimony should be cancelled for security reasons. When a cry went up opposing the request, Netanyahu went behind closed doors with the judge to explain the need/reason and the request was granted.

Then Segal posted the above.

Reportedly Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said today in the Defense and Security Committee session that we are closer than ever on a hostage agreement.

Tonight's scheduled meeting of the heads of the Coalition parties to discuss firing the Attorney General has been cancelled.

One need not be Albert Einstein to wonder if a hostage deal is set to be finalized and announced and/or signed tomorrow.

Let's hope and pray.

Interesting Psak: Rain Prayers

Due to the shortage of rain while we have already arrived at the middle of the month of Kislev, the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rav Kalman Ber and Rav Dovid Yosef, has issued a psak that the prayer "Aneinu" for rain should now be added to our daily services.

The Chief Rabbis also point out that the two chapters of Tehillim, Chapters 121 and 130, should continue to be said for the safety of the soldiers, for the healing of the injured and for the return f the hostages

Regular Contrails

about this morning's patterns in the sky of the symbol for remembering the hostages... there was a lot of chatter about who was behind it..

initial reports said that it was NOT done by the Air Force or an Air Force pilot but was a private civilian initiative.

Nice.

Later in the morning conflicting reports came out saying it was Air Force pilots that did it (not clear if it is was one pilot of multiple pilots in different parts of the country.

Ok. Nice.

Then later in the morning another report came out saying that the Air Force looked into it and it was an Air Force pilot but it was not intentional and just happened as part of regular flight patterns.

Funny.

Pilots normally fly around the country doing loops back and forth as part of their normal routines? Why aren't we seeing these contrails in these shapes on a regular basis? Or maybe they do different designs at different times as part of their normal routes, but we dont normally see these contrails at all, let alone in any variety of designs....

This was just a silly statement by the Air Force.

let it be

The Coalition is spending a lot of time and energy trying to pressure the Judiciary to push off PM Netanyahu's testimony (in his own trials) again. And that is understandable.

The Tikva Forum, a hostage advocacy group made up of some of the hostage families more aligned with Netanyahu and the Right who have until now opposed a deal for the hostages that might interfere with the goal of total victory have now also sent a letter to the judiciary asking to postpone Netanyahu's testimony. Interestingly, Tikva requested Netanyahu's testimony be delayed indefinitely until after a hostage deal is reached and the hostages come home. According to the Tikva Forum every minute Netanyahu spends testifying in court in his personal corruption cases is time wasted from working to bring the hostages home and to winning the war.

I ca understand the dedication to saying dont bring the hostages home at the expense of winning the war, dont bring them home at the expense of releasing terrorists from jail, and the like, even if I dont agree. They have been saying these arguments since October 7 2023, and I understand the logic in those positions, and they have the right to push those positions. I don't understand this current argument. Anyways they have been saying not to negotiate for the release of the hostages until after the war has been won with a complete and total victory, so if his testimony is supposed to postponed until after the hostages come home, when do they want him to testify - they dont want him to be working on a hostage deal now anyway!? Furthermore, such an open postponement gives Netanyahu every incentive to not come to a hostage deal at all but only to continuously work on achieving one - just never to achieve it so he never has to testify.

Let's not forget that Netanyahu should have been forced to resign from office when he was indicted. He was only allowed to remain in power and run again because he convinced the court that running the State would not interfere with his personal trial and his personal trial would not interfere with running the State. He convinced the judges and they let him remain Prime Minister on that condition. If he cant do both, as all his supporters are saying, he should resign.

And let's not forget, Netanyahu was busy and preoccupied with a speech at the United Nations when the targeted attack on Nasrallah was underway, so I think Netanyahu is talented enough to run the country and do big things while testifying

view near the top of the Syrian Hermon Mt., with the Shaldag special forces unit capturing the mountain.

The Syrian Hermon Mt is about 14km from the Israeli Hermon Mt. Israel captured this mountain and is there for the first time since 1973. This area from the Syrian Hermon until Israel's border will be held as an expanded DMZ to keep Israel safe from the chaos happening in Syria.

I dont know if there is a plan yet, but I am curious if this is land we are going to be holding on to or if it is just temporary until the rebels in Syria settle down, finish capturing different areas and establish a government. I cant imagine Syria will be happy about this if we hold on to it long term...

decades

I just heard the following expression and thought it was very fitting for the current days we are experiencing..

"There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen"

I looked it up, having never heard it before and discovered that it was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin that first said this...

the agent?

Remember a short while ago when the IDF was busy taking out Hamas leaders and then went on to take out every single top Hezbollah leader?

People were wondering who was the spy in Hezbollah helping Israel. It was somewhat of a joke, maybe also a little bit serious. Israel's level of secured intelligence turned out to be off the charts great and accurate.

Well, at this point, one might say Ayatollah Khameini is either next in line to be eliminated or he is possibly the Israeli agent revealing the whereabouts of all the terrorist leaders so they can be eliminated. That would be great if it turned out Khameini is the Israel plant who has been foiling the nuclear plans all along and helping Israel take out the terrorists

Russia: Assad left Syria, giving instructions for a non-violent transfer of power

  -- Kann News

Basher Al-Assad was always known for being such a magnanimous person...

Maybe Assad left Syria, maybe he did not. That seems to be unclear and in dispute right now. Some are saying his plane may have even crashed when escaping. Nothing is completely clear at this point.

Regardless of where Assad may be, I am not sure rebel forces chasing him out of Damascus and into hiding (and maybe further) can fairly be categorized and described as "Assad ordered a non-violent transfer of power"...

ANNEX GAZA, JUDEA, & SUMMARIA: THE SCREAMING RIGHT (book review: One Jewish State)

ANNEX GAZA, JUDEA, & SUMMARIA: THE SCREAMING RIGHT

Harold Goldmeier teaches international university students at Touro College Jerusalem. He is an award-winning entrepreneur who received the Governor’s Award (Illinois) for family investment programs in the workplace from the Commission on the Status of Women. He was a Research and Teaching Fellow at Harvard, worked for four governors, and recently sold his business in Chicago. He is a managing partner of an investment firm, a business management consultant, and a public speaker on business, social, and public policy issues.

Time is Ripe

The wind is at their backs. Activists screaming for a Greater Israel want the government to annex Gaza, Judea, and Samaria. Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has published the manifesto.

Gaza is no longer a factor among the existential threats to Israel. According to Jared Kushner, the airstrip sliver of land will be gentrified into Vegas with a seashore. Hezbollah is enervated but police actions similar to America’s war on drug cartels ought to suffice. Iran is all talk until the Trump administration and the women of Iran overthrow their abusers. Houthis are busy getting rich off blackmail payoffs from shipping magnets. Iraq is a political and military mess. Syria barely survives as a viable nation lacking enough military forces to stave off rebel tribes. The Arabian Gulf States are morphing into Middle East Disney theme parks. Democrat Party leaders appear pathetic, the party in tatters, and without a clear message.

This simmering stewpot undergirds the hardihood of Religious Zionists, ultra-nationalists, and Evangelicals to fulfill their dreams to expand the state bigger than the Kingdom of David and  Solomon. Imagination has them envisioning Jewish communities from Lebanon’s Latani River to Eilat, from the Mediterranean through Gaza to the eastern border of the Jordan Valley abutting Jordan. Friedman’s screed talks only of Gaza. Unfolding events make anything possible including France enforcing peace in Lebanon, chaos in Syria, Pres-elect Donald Trump filling critical U.S. government positions with politically hard-right thumpers, and few in Israel besides the judiciary willing to challenge Prime Minister Netanyahu.

The Manifesto

Team members responsible for the historic Abraham Accords are visionaries. Former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman was a key member of the team. They all deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, at the very least. The Abraham Accords is so authentic it survives the October 7 barbaric, genocidal attack by Hamas against Israel, the vicious battles in Lebanon, the Red Sea attacks, and Israel-Iran hostilities. One Jewish State is David Friedman’s manifesto about where the Middle East goes from here.

Friedman calls for an end to the conundrum of the two-state solution. Friedman is convinced that one state, ruled by Jews – Israel – is the only solution to stability and peace in the Middle East. His position is disappointing. It lacks vision. Friedman offers America’s rule over Puerto Rico as the model for a one-state rule by Israel. He gives no quarter to the innate desire for self-determination and national pride driving Palestinians. He and Simpaticos fervently believe that Palestinians lust far more for the blood of the Jews than seek a national homeland. The two-state solution has been a failing talking point from colonial British times through Donald Trump’s 2020 “deal of the century.” A state of its own will train and arm terrorists to erase Israel. Friedman points to a survey claiming that 85% of Palestinians agree with Hamas regarding October 7. He sighs, “Perhaps that says it all.”

In the last chapter, Friedman claims Israel tried living in peace, side-by-side with Gazan Palestinians since 2005; they had local self-rule and economic independence to build a prosperous, peace-loving, Palestinian pearl on the sea. Instead, terrorists took charge: “We cannot repeat the mistake in Gaza.” Only a Jewish-ruled state governing Palestinians can safeguard Israel.

Ambassador Friedman ignores that Israel lives in relative peace with Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, and the Gulf states. The book would be more relevant if Friedman had researched and exposed why Israeli Druze are patriotic. What are the ingredients for successful coexistence with the Arabs of Abu Ghosh, the African Hebrew Israelites, and Bedouins? How can Israel make the formula work with Palestinians? Israel is home to 97 embassies most established following the Oslo Accords. Attempts at peace have had their blessings. Friedman ignores this peace progress.

In a greater Israel, he argues, Palestinians will be ruled akin to US rule over Puerto Rican islanders. It is his model for coexistence. But it took some 300 years for the Spanish and US colonizers to drive out any notion of self-determination and nationalism. Massacres were helpful. The U.S. government maintains army and air force bases and the National Guard is federalized at will. Puerto Ricans prefer statehood but Americans refuse.

What, Ambassador Friedman, is Israel prepared to do with its Palestinians--massacre, deport, offer citizenship including Israeli passports? Allow free movement and civil rights? Manage the healthcare system, schools, and economy? Provide police for civil order and peace on the streets. We barely do any of these things for Arab-Israeli communities.  Is Israel ready to deploy soldiers in Palestinian neighborhoods full-time, forever? Engage in ethnic cleansing? Will peace escape us for another 250 years until self-determination and nationalism are wiped from the Palestinian ethos?

Takeaway

The most egregious shortcoming of One Jewish State is that Friedman ignores that, de facto, one Jewish-ruled state has ruled Judea and Samaria, more or less, for 57 years. Palestinians and world leaders call it “occupation.” Both sides have documented the extent of that rule. A responsible overview is detailed in a May 28, 2024, article for the Council on Foreign Affairs, titled “Who Governs the Palestinians?”

Daniel Gordis tells the story in one of his books about a colleague who is a popular, soft-spoken, and dedicated Palestinian teacher. They were friendly so he asked the colleague’s opinion about the conflict. To paraphrase, she calmly responded that conquerors have come and gone across Palestine for centuries and one day the Jews will be gone, too. Friedman’s vision of one Jewish-ruled state condemns Israel to another 250 years of “occupation.” It is, he asserts, “the last best hope to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”  The book lacks the vision Friedman and his colleagues brought to the Abraham Accords. We expected so much more from him.
