Baruch Hatov Vehametiv
Baruch Hatov Vehameitiv!
The bracha of Hatov Vehamitiv is said for good things but is different than Shehecheyanu in that it is intended to be said when the news or event is good for not just myself but for other people as well.
The brqcha of Hatov Vehameitiv was established as part of Birkat Hamazon (aka bentching) to thank God for the allowance we received to bury the many people of Beitar who were killed in the Bar Kochba revolt, who's bodies had been miraculously preserved from decomposing during the time they remained unburied.
I think this bracha is appropriate today as the remains of Yehuda Katz, fallen soldier from the battle of Sultan Yacoub in Lebanon 1982, have finally been breought back to Israel for Jewish burial. Katz's remains were the last remains outstanding from that battle after those of Zachary Baumel and Zvi Feldman were brought back in 2019 and 2025 respectively.
It took 44 years, but Israel kept looking and did not give up. Another painful chapter has been closed.
Rest in peace Yehuda.
