beautiful contestants everywhere
Beauty was in the news this past week.
The Miss Universe pageant was held in Israel, in Eilat. that alone is newsworthy, but this turned into a bigger news item as the country was shut down for tourists due to the Omicron variant revealed in Israel. People got upset and used this as a target while their own relatives could not come into the country yet the beauty pageant contestants were allowed in. As they say, the show must go on and the pageant is being held as planned.
The second item was a beauty pageant in Saudi Arabia. The King Abdulaziz camel beauty pageant made the news as organizers of the event announced they would be cracking down on cheating - the camels have been getting botox injections to make their humps and lips more appealing, against the rules of the pageant, along with collagen fillers and the use of bands tied around body parts to restrict blood flow and make them look bigger. This pageant has 33,000 contestants, with $66,000,000 on the line.
The question is, are we treating camels like women or are we treating women like camels? Maybe it is time. in 2021, to put an end to such beauty pageants....

Beauty Queen Gets Expelled From School
A 16 year old teenage girl from a Mamlachti-Dati school registered to partake in a beauty contest for the region in which she lives. When she won the beauty contest, she found out she lost everything else. She was thrown out of school, harming her potential for the future (if school helps you for the future, which is not clear), as she will have problems with the bagrut and her draft in the army.
the school found out about her participation, and decided it was inappropriate. The family is appealing. She says she first checked to make sure there would be no swimsuit contest and that she could wear tzanua clothing, and only when she found out everything would be ok did she register to participate. The school's response is that when the issue first came up they told her it is inappropriate and they could not allow it, and she went ahead with it anyway. A final decision has yet to be made. (source: Ynet)
What do you think? Are they right to throw her out or should they let her back in?
It does seem inappropriate, even if she was careful about tzniyus, and all school's have rules and boundaries. If they told her in advance, and she ignored the defined boundaries, maybe they have the right to lay down the law. On the other hand, they could use this as an educational experience and teach the kids why it is inappropriate, what is wrong with beauty contests, what's wrong with religious girls being in them, why teens should not be doing that, or whatever angle they want to explore. Then again, they can still make it into an educational experience, even if they do expel her from the school..

A new kind of beauty contest
Somebody sent this to me as a joke, but I kind of like the general idea....
Instead of, or at least in addition to, beauty contests that display airheads and bimbos in bathing suits, have a beauty contest for morals... They do it in Saudi Arabia already...

beautiful women
I was hesitant to put this in the Torah Thoughts blog, so here it is.
Parshat Ki Seitzei
In this weeks parsha we have the Torah allowing us in battle to take the "captive woman" as a wife. The Torah gives some of the technical details of how he has to make her spend a month looking decrepit, such as letting her nails grow, shaving her head, crying over her family in the entrance of the house, etc.
Rashi says She should look ugly with all this crying so that he will look at her and compare her to the Jewish girl and see how the Jewish women make themselves beautiful and "made up" and this man will then likely abandon the captive woman and marry a Jewish woman.
We see from this Rashi that Jewish women are supposed to beautify themselves so Jewish men will be attracted to them and not be swayed by foreign beauty.
In many frum communities, we have developed the style that girls/women should not dress attractively. They think that by doing so it is not tzniusdig and is therefore inappropriate. So they dress bland and frumpy and shlubby.
Yet the Torah here tells us that Jewish women are meant to be beautiful and to appear beautiful. By doing so, they keep the Jewish men attracted to them rather than to others.
