Quote of the Day

Shas and United Torah Judaism are not part of this coalition and I see not reason to change the makeup of this coalition... This coalition is functioning and we have seen this in regards to the budget, along with a slew of Basic Laws, with the selection of representatives to the judicial committee for selecting judges and dayanim. We really do have a functioning coalition and I see no reason right now to bring in Shas and UTJ  - not before the budget passes nor after it.

-- Minister of Finance Avigdor Lieberman

1. the Haredi news is reporting this as Lieberman exercising his veto - it is not a veto. For a veto there would have to be negotiations on the table, an attempt to bring them in, a desire on their side to join the coalition, and the like. Unless things are going on behind the scenes that have not been made public, which is possible, there are no attempts being made to bring them in, so this is not a veto. it is just an answer, a spicy answer, to a question he was asked by a journalist.

2. the feeling is mutual. They don't seem to want to join the coalition. I see no conflict here.

a technical error

As I have said before, I never get upset or surprised by secular politicians not keeping Shabbos. Just the opposite, when they are careful, almost always out of sensitivity to their religious political partners, it is a nice thing, but not a given or expected.

The fact that Head of Opposition MK Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud) called Linoy Ashram on Shabbos to congratulate her on winning the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics, and posted on social media the video of the phone call, does not bother me. His apology, or the Likud's apology, to their political partners also does not bother me - that is politics. They have few political partners right now and they cannot afford to let their last ones get or remain upset at them.

The only thing weird about it is the Likud's press release explaining that it was a technical mishap. A technical error. I am not quite sure what that means. The video guy pressed record by mistake? Netanyahu didn't mean to make the phone call but the phone went berserk and dialed on its own - maybe a butt dial or some water got into the phone? He pressed the "upload" button by mistake? What was the technical error? I would like to get more information about this.

there's no one better

I am confident that Mike Herzog is highly qualified to serve as Ambassador to the United States. From the description of his experience it sure sounds like Mike Herzog is highly qualified to serve as Ambassador to the United States.

Yet the appointment of Mike Herzog to the position of Ambassador to the United States of America just sounds like more of the typical "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" form of nepotism (it isn't classic nepotism, as he was not appointed by his brother the President of Israel Isaac Herzog, but it is the workaround nepotism where I hire or appoint your relative and you hire or appoint my relative)  in government.

Serve Israel well, in representing our interests in the US of A.

The truth is that ambassadorial appointments, I think in all or most countries, are pretty much always payback for some sort of loyalty or donations or other connections, so this appointment is less egregious than appointments in government positions, but still....

Israelis vs tourists

Globes has an astounding statistic.

In the past month, July 2021, 49,000 tourists entered Israel (with the special permit system, having 1st degree relative, etc plus some approved groups).

In the same time period, 500,000 Israelis left Israel to travel abroad.

Wow. Israelis really didn't like being cooped up over the past year and a half!

If Israelis can travel around the world willy nilly with virtually no limitations and come back to Israel, potentially bringing the virus and its variants back with them, I see no reason to keep such tight limits on tourists entering.

if the airport is going to be open, open it for tourists as well. There is no reason to keep tourists out due to fear of them bringing in the virus while letting Israelis travel freely and bring it back with them.
