Proposed Law: banning the muezzin speakers
MK Moti Yogev (Habayit Hayehudi) has proposed a law that is coming to vote today in the Ministerial Legislative Committee. Yogev has proposed a law that would prohibit Houses of Prayer from using PA systems, as use of such systems hurts many of the residents residing in the area within earshot of the broadcasts over the PA systems.
Yogev points to the many complaints from people residing in various areas around the country, including in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv - Jaffa, the Galil, and other places, who suffer from the early morning broadcasts, and other broadcasts throughout the day, of the call to muezzin from the mosques. Freedom of Religious Worship should not be a reason to harm the quality of life of other people, and sometimes they are even used to broadcast messages of incitement.
This law proposal was raised previously with the vote on it being postponed in an attempt by Yogev to shore up more support for it..
Activists led by Jerusalem City Councilman Aryeh King last night held a protest outside of Minister Aryeh Deri's home, a protest that included the blasting of a muezzin call to prayer, to encourage him to support the proposal, as he has so far refused to sign on to the proposal.
Because of the protest outside the home of Deri, MK Yigal Guetta (Shas) has said he will work to encourage Shas members to oppose the law.
